The song "Tonttu" by Finnish singer Suvi Teräsniska depicts a winter night where a grey-bearded and wise "tonttu", or gnome, patrols around a manor. The first verse describes a cold and fiery night where the gnome can't seem to fall asleep, watching silently as the moon passes through the snowy trees and rooftops. In the second verse, the gnome then goes to observe the surroundings, looking towards the sky and thinking about his problems. He strokes his beard and shakes his head, trying to find a solution but ultimately decides to go on with his work.
The third verse involves the gnome visiting the manor's livestock and seeing the chickens and sheep sleeping. He then goes to observe the people inside the house, the gnome admires them and quietly observes the children playing. The final verse shows the forest and the river below in silence as the hours pass by. The gnome listens carefully to the flow of the water and reflects on where it may lead to.
Overall, the song's lyrics suggest that despite the gnome's wisdom, he still faces his own personal challenges and problems, just like any other being.
