Blood Makes Noise
Suzanne Vega Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd like to help you doctor
Yes I really really would
But the din in my head
It's too much and it's no good
I'm standing in a windy tunnel
Shouting through the roar
And I'd like to give the information
You're asking for

But blood makes noise
It's a ringing in my ear
Blood makes noise
And I can't really hear you
In the thickening of fear

I think that you might want to know
The details and the facts
But there's something in my blood
Denies the memory of the acts
So just forget it Doc.
I think it's really
Cool that you're concerned
But we'll have to try again
After the silence has returned

'Cause blood makes noise
It's a ringing in my ear
Blood makes noise
And I can't really hear you
In the thickening of fear

Blood makes noise

Overall Meaning

Suzanne Vega's song "Blood Makes Noise" explores the inner turmoil of a person who is unable to communicate due to the overwhelming fear and emotions that they are experiencing. The song begins with the singer expressing a willingness to help a doctor, but they feel unable to do so due to the din in their head being too much to bear. They describe standing in a windy tunnel, struggling to hear and communicate through the roar. The singer acknowledges the doctor's need for information, but their fear is making it impossible for them to recall the details and facts that are being asked of them.

The chorus of the song reinforces the theme of fear and its overwhelming power over the singer's ability to communicate. They describe the ringing in their ear caused by the noise that their blood is making. This imagery serves as a metaphor for the heightened emotions that are preventing the singer from being able to articulate what they know. The final verse of the song seeks to reassure the doctor that the singer appreciates their concern and will try again once the silence has returned. This final line is a poignant reminder that sometimes, the only way for a person to overcome their fear and find their voice is by allowing themselves some time to process their emotions.

What a freaking brilliant song.

I saw her in New Hampshire this past weekend, and she performed this. It was just her and a backup guitarist with an electric guitar and a looping pedal. It sounded remarkably full and true to this.

@leighsmith3099

Is that the geriatric looking guitarist that looks like he's gonna drop dead any minute?
