Hey Cinderella
Suzy Bogguss Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We believed in fairy tales that day
I watched your father give you away
Your aim was true when the pink bouquet
Fell right into my hands

We danced for hours and we drank champagne
You screamed and laughed when I got up and sang
And then you rode away in a white Mustang
To your castle in the sand

Through the years and the kids and the jobs
And the dreams that lost their way
Do you ever stop and wonder
Do you ever just want to say

Hey hey, Cinderella, what's the story all about
I got a funny feeling we missed a page or two somehow
Ohh-ohhhh, Cinderella, maybe you could help us out
Does the shoe fit you now

We're older but no more the wise
We've learned the art of compromise
Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry
And sometimes we just break down

We're good now 'cause we have to be
Come to terms with our vanity
Sometimes we still curse gravity
When no one is around

Yeah, our dolls gather dust in the corner of the attic
And bicycles rust in the rain
Still we walk in that fabled shadow
Sometimes we call her name

Hey hey, Cinderella, what's the story all about
I got a funny feeling we missed a page or two somehow
Ohh-ohhhh, Cinderella, maybe you could help us out
Does the shoe fit you now

Hey! Cinderella, maybe you could help us out
Does the shoe fit you now
Fit you now, Ohh-ohhhh, Cinderella (Cinderella) Does it fit you now?

Cinderella (Cinderella) Ohh-ohhh-ohhhh Cinderella (Cinderella)
Hey Cinderella (Cinderella)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Suzy Bogguss's “Hey Cinderella” tell the story of a couple’s journey after their romantic fairy tale wedding. The opening lines refer to the wedding day and the fairytale they believed in at that time. The next several lines describe the wedding from the perspective of the singer, who caught the bride’s pink bouquet. The lyrics then move to a description of the intervening years of marriage, kids, jobs, and lost dreams. The chorus repeats and the couple wonders what they might have missed along the way, almost like they want to go back and relive the past. The final line, “Does the shoe fit you now” is a reference to the glass slipper in the Cinderella story. The couple is asking the bride if she still feels like the storybook heroine of their past.

In the second verse, the lyrics talk about the couple’s current status. They are no longer naive, but they’ve learned how to compromise. They laugh and they cry together and sometimes, they break down. They’re more mature now, but they still have moments of nostalgia when they think about their wedding and their “fabled shadow” or Cinderella. The final chorus repeats the questions that remain unanswered about their journey and whether the shoe still fits.

The song is a reminder that married life is not always a fairy tale romance. It’s a journey that can take different turns along the way, and it requires a lot of hard work to keep the relationship going. Although it may not be the same as the fairy tale they believed in, the couple still remembers their wedding day as a happy time and a touchstone of their relationship.

Heard this song today, first time in quite a while. Still, this song brings tears to my eyes, both for its beauty of the musical composition, as well as the bittersweet (or rather, sad) message of the song.

@Tom-qn5nd

Thank you for the information

Suzy has such an amazing voice, pure talent.  This is really lacking in today's music.  The video is so well done, it is sexy, but not repulsive.

@Cocedren

Thanks Suzy! Your videos were always playing every early morning on CMT during the 1990s as I headed for school. It was always pleasant to hear your voice and music before starting the day. Even now, listening to them brings back so many memories and puts me in a nostalgic pleasant mood.
