After taking a brief recording hiatus in the mid-1990s to start a family with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider, Bogguss returned to the country music scene to find that her charting power had already faded. Although she last appeared on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1999, Bogguss continues to record and perform around the country to a loyal following.
Her most recent recordings have ventured into swing and jazz variations of country. These albums really showcase the tremendous talent in her voice. Suzy is a true singer, and her voice has so much versatility.
In 2014, Suzy added an album of Merle Haggard songs entitled "Lucky". The country & western flavor dominates this album, unlike some of her other recent work. To promote this new album, Suzy has embarked on a nationwide tour.

You're gonna have to find a soft heart in someone else
'Cause I almost drowned comin' to your rescue
This time around, you're gonna have to save yourself
I'm all out of rope and I'm all out of reasons
You had me thinkin' I could help
That you needed a friend
You keep goin' back out over your head again
You're gonna have to save yourself this time darlin'
You're gonna have to find a soft heart in someone else
'Cause I almost drowned comin' to your rescue
This time around, you're gonna have to save yourself
You can knock on the door
You can rattle all the windows
You can howl like a dog but you're not comin' in
I'm anybody's fool til I learn how the game goes
And I will never be you're fool again
You're gonna have to save yourself this time darlin'
You're gonna have to find a soft heart in someone else
'Cause I almost drowned comin' to your rescue
This time around, you're gonna have to save yourself
The lyrics of Suzy Bogguss's "Save Yourself" tell the story of a person who has come to the realization that they can no longer come to the rescue of their loved one. At some point, this person had almost drowned while trying to save their loved one who kept finding themselves in dangerous situations. The singer of the song has had enough and has determined that it is time for the loved one to take responsibility for their actions and find someone else to help them. The singer acknowledges that they had thought they could help and be a friend, but they have run out of reasons to continue being there.
The loved one keeps coming back despite previously being in danger again and again. The key message of the song is that everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves, and no one can rely solely on others for help. The singer still cares about the loved one but cannot continue the cycle of always coming to the rescue; therefore, they have become wiser and will never fall for the little white lies again. In this song, Suzy Bogguss is delivering a warning to her loved one to take responsibility for themselves and save themselves.
