Man From Mecca
Sweet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take a black cat I think of what you'll had

Here's a wildcat

Take a white mouse hiding in a house

Here's a colored love
Pay, pay, pay you can get it if you

Say, say, say that you wanna but

Hey, hey, hey, just remember it's the way

Day or nighttime you can really shine

With your groupie clothes

If the inside is on the outside

Everybody knows

Pay, pay, pay you can get it if you

Say, say, say that you wanna but

Hey, hey, hey, just remember it's the way

Take a black cat I think of what you'll had

Here's a wildcat

Take a white mouse hiding in a house

Here's a colored love

Pay, pay, pay you can get it if you

Say, say, say that you wanna but

Hey, hey, hey, just remember it's the way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sweet's song "Man From Mecca" seem to be a commentary on the superficial nature of relationships and the ways in which people try to impress or attract others. The opening lines, "Take a black cat I think of what you'll had / Here's a wildcat / Take a white mouse hiding in a house / Here's a colored love," suggest that people are often attracted to people or things that are flashy or showy, rather than sincere or genuine. The repeated refrain of "pay, pay, pay you can get it if you / say, say, say that you wanna but / hey, hey, hey, just remember it's the way" further emphasizes this idea, as it implies that people are willing to pay or do whatever it takes to win someone's affection, even if it means being insincere or putting on a false persona.

The second half of the song seems to suggest that true beauty and attraction come from within, rather than from external appearances or actions. The lyrics "If the inside is on the outside / Everybody knows" imply that true beauty and attractiveness come from being genuine and authentic, rather than from wearing "groupie clothes" or putting on a false front. Overall, the song seems to be cautioning against the dangers of superficiality and emphasizing the importance of authenticity and sincerity in relationships.

Definitely a heavy hitter. Cheers...

Always loved this "B" side Bobby! At that stage their "B" sides were always more rocking & heavy than the "A" sides! In fact the Sweet might be the best"B" side band in history! My fave "B" side of theirs is "Own Up, Take A Look At Yourself". Do you know that one?? Tiger.

@BobbyGass5

No I don't Tiger but I sampled it on youtube. Nice tune. I'm a big fan of B sides. It seemed A sides were the record company's idea and the B side were the bands...

@DrDES-dp6un

'Own up...' has been the flip side of 'Teenage Rampage'
