Midnight to Daylight
Sweet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her face was turnin' red
'Cause everybody's talkin' bout
The thoughts inside her head
Was it six or seventeen
And old enough to know about
The things that should have been
You know just what I mean
The things that I do at midnight
You ain't gonna say at daylight
Daylight

I knew she couldn't see
She said she'd never played a star
But played it just for me
My head was in a state
'Cause every time she came with me
She said that she was late
I should have had her mate

The things that I do at midnight
You ain't gonna say at daylight
Daylight

The things that I do at midnight

You ain't gonna say at daylight
Daylight, daylight

Overall Meaning

In "Midnight to Daylight," Sweet sings about a young woman who is dealing with the consequences of her actions. Her face is turning red because everyone is talking about the thoughts inside her head. It's unclear whether she is six or seventeen years old, but she is definitely old enough to understand that her actions have consequences. Sweet implies that there are things that should have been done differently, and the young woman knows it.

Sweet uses the metaphor of midnight activities that the young woman engages in, activities that she knows she cannot talk about in the light of day. The things she does from midnight to daylight have to remain secret. The young woman cannot talk about them because of the social stigma attached to them, or perhaps because they are illegal or immoral.

The tone of the song is one of regret and shame. The young woman is ashamed of her actions, and the singer seems to imply that she should be. Sweet's "Midnight to Daylight" has a cautionary message about the importance of making the right choices and living with the consequences of those choices.
