Get In Touch With Yourself
Swing Out Sister Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can melt your deepest pain
Catch you out and give it back again
I can fill your each and every hour
Watching over you when no one's there

Standing still and motionless
Getting closer to the edge
You can hear the silent voices in your head
And you try turning back
But you're caught in a trap
'Till you find your conscience stops you in your tracks

Better get in touch with yourself
Do what you feel I'll make it real
Better get in touch with yourself
Because I'm the one you need so don't mess with me

Closer than a night of tenderness
Distant as you let each moment pass
But if you lose the gift that you recieve
Nothing fills the emptiness it leaves

Standing still and motionless
Getting closer to the edge
You can hear the silent voices in your head
And you try turning back
But you're caught in a trap
'Till you find your conscience stops you in your tracks

Better get in touch with yourself
Do what you feel I'll make it real

Better get in touch with yourself
Because I'm the one you need so don't mess with me

Overall Meaning

"Get in Touch With Yourself" by Swing Out Sister is a powerful and introspective song about finding one's true self and reconnecting with one's emotions. The lyrics describe the capability of the singer to understand and empathize with the deep pain and emotions of someone else, but also to challenge them to confront their inner thoughts and feelings. The phrase "get in touch with yourself" is used throughout the song as a call to action, urging listeners to explore their own emotions and desires and to avoid losing themselves in a world that can be distant and cold.

The verses describe the feeling of being caught in a trap, with the silent voices in one's head urging them to turn back from the brink of something dangerous or unfamiliar. However, the chorus provides a solution to this existential dilemma, with the message that by getting in touch with oneself and doing what one truly feels, one can make their dreams and desires a reality. The line "Because I'm the one you need so don't mess with me" is a poignant reminder to the listener that they are the only one who can truly control their own destiny, and that they should not be deterred or discouraged by others who try to interfere with their growth and self-discovery.

I had forgotten how great this song is... just brilliant. SOS is one of the best groups of all time.

I was working in Singapore in July, 1992. I traveled around that part of Asia too. I bought this album on cassette in a department store on the first floor of the building I was living in. I listened to it many, many times that summer. It meant more to me than I can put in words. As someone else wrote below, the album touched me very deeply emotionally. I wrote the group a letter also.

It is amazing! I first heard Swing Out Sister’s preceding album “Kaleidoscope World (1989)” on a Cathay Pacific flight from Singapore to Hong Kong around Christmas 1989 … It was an amazing time in the world !

I understand you...summer 1992 was a beautiful summer....

One of the most underrated songs of the 1990s. I was a little kid who remembers hearing songs from Swung Out Sister, back in the late 1990s. Like Surrender and this one. Nostalgia forever! 😎

Great song. Great band. Great album. I love the bass and subtle string parts recalling MSFB and the Philly sound. Good ol' times. SOS brings you happiness like Barry White was. Rare and precious in this fucked up world.

Cool song, this gem of a song only get better with time.

All the songs in this album strike heavy emotional chords within me. This one, as well as Incomplete Without You, yank me back into a past relationship filled with despair and ecstacy in equal measure. I can't think of any other groups efforts that affect me so solidly.

Like the phase shifting effect.
