Although the band started out playing at Christian music festivals, they shun the label of "Christian rock," with singer and guitarist Jon Foreman saying, "For us, it's a faith, not a genre. We've always been very open and honest about where the songs are coming from. For us, these songs are for everyone. Calling us `Christian rock' tends to be a box that closes some people out and excludes them. And that's not what we're trying to do. Music has always opened my mind -- and that's what we want." They started out on Charlie Peacock's label "re:think" and spent several years appearing at Christian festivals and enjoying Christian radio hits. Most of their early tours were with Christian bands and both of the band's new members were borrowed from Christian bands.
Switchfoot did not see success outside of the Christian rock scene until they were featured alongside singer Mandy Moore on the A Walk To Remember soundtrack. The band's first true commercial success came in 2003 with the release of their fourth major label (and first mainstream label) offering, The Beautiful Letdown. The album went on to sell more than 2 million albums and Switchfoot became the most popular rock band to be associated with Christian music.
They were featured on the British Edition of the Spiderman II soundtrack along with the likes of Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional to name a few, in 2004 with the song 'Meant To Live'.
In 2005 Switchfoot released "Nothing Is Sound". The album went gold within 3 months and received much critical acclaim.
Switchfoot's highly anticipated album, titled "Oh! Gravity." was released on December 26th, 2006.
On November 10th, 2009, Switchfoot released their first album produced under their own label, lowercase people. "Mess of Me", a single from the album released months before the CD, has enjoy chart-topping radio plays since its release.
In 2010 Switchfoot released their album, "Hello Hurricane".
On September 27th, 2011, to much anticipation and excitement, Switchfoot released their newest album, "Vice Verses".

Company Car
Switchfoot Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When he said I'd put up a fight to be someone,
A fight to be me but see now,
I'm down,
Under the pavement of capital hills,
And lowercase people
As time rolls by my dreams have become,
That which is attainable
I've got the company car,
I'm the one swingin' at 2 below par,
Yeah I've become one with the ones that I never believed in,
I've got the company car...
Hey, I'm the king,
Of things,
I've always dispised
I'm the gingerbread man that's been eaten alive
I'm half baked,
I'm fake,
Ya see I've got hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk and 200 bucks
I pass go, but oh, life's taken it's toll
Have I won Monopoly, to forfit my song but see
I've got the company car,
I'm the one swingin' at 2 below par,
Yeah I've become one with the ones that I never believed in,
I've got the company car...
Yah all the kings horses have their hooves on the walls,
their takin' pictures of the man who's lost all of his
Masks of pretension,
he's got 2 faces left,
His is the one that he hides,
On the left.. behind that smile..
Hiding tears,
And fear,
That burns like an engine,
That drives him away from the ones that he loves
Mike was right, hey Mike, we're one and the same,
we're the faceless combantants in the lonliest game..
Oh but say,
I'll wave as I'm drivin by,
With that smirk in my eye
Yellin hey, I'm something man, check me out
I've got the company car,
I'm the one swingin' at 2 below par,
Yeah I've become one with the ones that I never believed in,
I've got the company car...
The song "Company Car" by Switchfoot is a deep introspection about the struggles of success and the sacrifices that come with it. The lyrics talk about how the artist had dreams that now seem attainable and the toll that achieving them has taken on him. He is half-baked and fake, with hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk and $200, revealing that he has become one with the ones he never believed in. He is the king of things he has always despised and his life has taken a toll, but he can still wave and smirk as he drives by, with his company car being a symbol of his success.
The artist acknowledges that he is part of the game where people fight to earn more and be successful, but this has forced him to hide his true emotions and fears behind a smile. The kings' horses, who have figuratively lost their hooves, are taking pictures of him, making him feel lost and alone. Ultimately, the lyrics reflect the artist's wavering between acceptance and discontent with the sacrifices he has made for success.

Mike, was right,
Mike was correct when he said that I will struggle to carve out an identity for myself
When he said I'd put up a fight to be someone,
Mike correctly predicted the effort I would have to put in to become someone meaningful
A fight to be me but see now,
However, I have not been successful in my pursuit of individuality and now find myself lost in the crowd
I'm down,
I feel hopeless and defeated
Under the pavement of capital hills,
I am drowning in the oppressive domination of the wealthy and powerful
And lowercase people
I am among the oppressed and powerless
As time rolls by my dreams have become,
As time passes, my aspirations have evolved
That which is attainable
I have shifted my focus towards goals that are more realistic and achievable
Not what I'm looking for
However, these goals are not what I truly desire
I've got the company car,
I have accomplished enough to get a company car
I'm the one swingin' at 2 below par,
I am a skilled and successful person in my profession
Yeah I've become one with the ones that I never believed in,
I have joined the ranks of those individuals who I used to look down upon

I have achieved a level of success that makes me feel like a king
Of things,
I have gained control of materialistic possessions and wealth
I've always dispised

I'm fake,
I feel like I am living a false existence
Ya see I've got hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk and 200 bucks

I pass go, but oh, life's taken it's toll
Although I have achieved a lot, life has left me feeling tired and worn out
Have I won Monopoly, to forfit my song but see
I have succeeded at achieving materialistic success but feel like I have lost something truly valuable
Yah all the kings horses have their hooves on the walls,
All the successful individuals are making their way up the corporate ladder
their takin' pictures of the man who's lost all of his
They are observing the one who has lost all sense of purpose and individuality
Masks of pretension,
People are pretending to be something they are not
he's got 2 faces left,
The only thing left of his true identity are two faces
His is the one that he hides,
He hides his true identity from the world
On the left.. behind that smile..
His true self is hidden behind a veneer of happiness
Hiding tears,
He is hiding his pain and sorrow
And fear,
He is frightened
That burns like an engine,
His fear is intense and all-consuming
That drives him away from the ones that he loves
His fear is causing him to distance himself from his family and friends
Mike was right, hey Mike, we're one and the same,
Mike and I are similar in our struggles to find and maintain an individual identity
we're the faceless combantants in the lonliest game..
We are fighting the struggle for individuality in a world that often feels unfriendly and unwelcoming
Oh but say,
However, despite our struggles, we should not give up hope
I'll wave as I'm drivin by,
I will continue to make progress towards my goals, but I will remain aware of the dangers of the pursuit of wealth and power
With that smirk in my eye
I will face challenges with a sense of humor and a positive attitude
Yellin hey, I'm something man, check me out
I will continue to celebrate my successes, but also remain humble and focused on the things that truly matter
