Although the band started out playing at Christian music festivals, they shun the label of "Christian rock," with singer and guitarist Jon Foreman saying, "For us, it's a faith, not a genre. We've always been very open and honest about where the songs are coming from. For us, these songs are for everyone. Calling us `Christian rock' tends to be a box that closes some people out and excludes them. And that's not what we're trying to do. Music has always opened my mind -- and that's what we want." They started out on Charlie Peacock's label "re:think" and spent several years appearing at Christian festivals and enjoying Christian radio hits. Most of their early tours were with Christian bands and both of the band's new members were borrowed from Christian bands.
Switchfoot did not see success outside of the Christian rock scene until they were featured alongside singer Mandy Moore on the A Walk To Remember soundtrack. The band's first true commercial success came in 2003 with the release of their fourth major label (and first mainstream label) offering, The Beautiful Letdown. The album went on to sell more than 2 million albums and Switchfoot became the most popular rock band to be associated with Christian music.
They were featured on the British Edition of the Spiderman II soundtrack along with the likes of Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional to name a few, in 2004 with the song 'Meant To Live'.
In 2005 Switchfoot released "Nothing Is Sound". The album went gold within 3 months and received much critical acclaim.
Switchfoot's highly anticipated album, titled "Oh! Gravity." was released on December 26th, 2006.
On November 10th, 2009, Switchfoot released their first album produced under their own label, lowercase people. "Mess of Me", a single from the album released months before the CD, has enjoy chart-topping radio plays since its release.
In 2010 Switchfoot released their album, "Hello Hurricane".
On September 27th, 2011, to much anticipation and excitement, Switchfoot released their newest album, "Vice Verses".

Easier Than Love
Switchfoot Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ah la la la la la la
Sex is currency
She sells cars,
She sells magazines
Addictive bittersweet, crack your hands,
With the hopeless nicotine's
Everyone's a lost romantic,
Since our love became a kissing show
Everyone's a Casanova,
Come and pass me the mistletoe
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone
She, is easier to love
It's easier to lie
It's easier to fake and smile and brag
It's easier leave
It's easier to lie
It's harder to face ourselves at night
Feeling alone,
What have we done?
What is the monster we've become?
Were is my soul?
Ah, la, la, la, la,
La la la la la la la
Sex is industry,
The CEO, of corporate policy
Skin-deep ministry,
Suburban youth, hailing so-called liberty
Every advertising antic,
I've been a ways with a neon glow
War and love become pedantic,
We wage love with a mistletoe
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone
She, is easier to love
It's easier to lie
It's easier to fake and smile and brag
It's easier leave
It's easier to lie
It's harder to face ourselves at night
Feeling alone,
What have we done?
What is the monster we've become?
Were is my soul?
Ah, la, la, la, la,
(yeah!)
La la la la la la la,
La, la, la, la, oh,
(yeah!)
La, la, la, la, no!
It's easier to love,
It's easier to love
It's easier to love,
It's easier to love
She, is easier to love,
It's easier to, love
Everyone's been scared to death of,
Everyone's been scared to death of,
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone,
Alone
It's easier to love,
It's easier to love,
It's easier to fake and smile and brag
It's easier to leave,
It's easier to lie,
It's harder to face ourselves at night
Feeling alone,
What have we done?
What is the monster we've become?
Where is my soul? (where is my?)
Where is my soul?
Ah, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la, no!
La, la, la, la, oh,
The song "Easier Than Love" by Switchfoot sheds light on the various aspects of the modern world we live in. The opening lines of the song, "Ah la la la la la la, Ah la la la la la la," give a happy-go-lucky vibe that is and contradicts the themes addressed in the rest of the song. The first verse talks about how sex is being used as currency, with everything from selling cars to magazines to corporate policies being sold based on sex appeal. It is a bittersweet addiction that is compared to nicotine. The chorus, "She is easier to love, it's easier to lie, it's easier to fake and smile and brag," speaks about how it is easier to brush things under the carpet and resort to dishonesty, rather than face the harsh realities of life.
The second verse speaks about the advertising industry, which uses flashy neon lights and gimmicky ploys, to sell an idea or product to the masses. The chorus is repeated, highlighting how everyone is terrified of being alone or dying alone. The line, "it's harder to face ourselves at night," emphasizes how the wrongdoings we commit and the people we hurt are hard to deal with and bring great shame. This line segues into the bridge, where the singer is seen questioning the whereabouts of their soul.
Overall, the song talks about how society is slowly losing its human touch, desensitized to the suffering of others and relying on quick fixes rather than facing reality. The "She" mentioned could be a representation of modern society itself, as it shows a sense of superficiality and shallowness that appears at the fore of our everyday interactions.
