Sooner Or Later
Switchfoot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come back and haunt me, follow me home
Give me a motive, swallow me whole
They say I've lost it
What could I know when I'm but a mockery?
I'm so alone

Sooner or later
You'll find out there's a hole in the wall
Sooner or later
You'll find out there's a hole in the wall

Today is ours, condemned to be free
Free to keep breathing, free to believe
I look to find You, down on my knees
Oh, God, I believe, please help me believe

Sooner or later
They'll find out there's a hole in the wall
Sooner or later
You'll find out that you'll dream to be that small

I'm a believer, help me believe
I'm a believer, help me believe

I gave it all away and I lost who I am
I threw it all away with everything to gain
And I'm taking the leap with dreams of shrinking
Dreams of shrinking, dreams of shrinking
Dreams of shrinking

Come back and haunt me, follow me home
Give me a motive, swallow me whole

Sooner or later

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Switchfoot's song "Sooner or Later" express a sense of loneliness, desperation, and longing for faith. The first stanza presents the idea of being haunted by something, perhaps a failure or a fault that one cannot escape from, followed by a plea for an apparent punishment, a motive which can be embraced and swallowed whole. The sense of despair deepens, as the singer's own thoughts and beliefs are being questioned by others, and he is unsure of what he believes anymore. The chorus of the song suggests that one day, the one that caused the hole in the wall will find out about it, and the singer will realize that he is dreaming to be small again. The second stanza presents a glimmer of hope, as the singer is trying to find God and begs for his help.

"Sooner Or Later (Soren's Song)"

Come back and haunt me,
Follow me home,
Give me a motive,
Swallow me whole.

They say I've lost it.
What could I know?
And I'm not a mockery.
I'm so alone.

Sooner or later you'll find out
There's a hole in the wall.
Yeah, sooner or later you'll find out
There's a hole in the wall.

Today is ours.
Condemned to be free.
Free to keep breathing.
Free to believe.

I look to find you
Down on my knees.
Oh, God, I believe!
Please help me believe.

Sooner or later they'll find out
There's a hole in the wall.
Yeah, sooner or later you'll find out
That you'll dream to be that small.

I'm a believer, help me believe.
I'm a believer, help me believe.

I gave it all away,
I lost who I am.
I threw it all away
With everything to gain.

And I'm taking the leap
With dreams of shrinking,
Dreams of shrinking.
Dreams of shrinking.
Dreams of shrinking.

Come back and haunt me,
Follow me home,
Give me a motive,
Swallow me whole.

Sooner or later.
Sooner or later.
Sooner or later.
You'll find out.
Sooner or later.
You always follow me home.
Sooner or later.
Sooner or later.

"God I believe, please help me believe." One of your best songs.

@KyleOfTheNorth

I might not listen to much Switchfoot a lot anymore, but there were several years of my life when these albums were coming out where they were almost exclusively what I listened to. Such great memories.

Sempre bom quando alguém posta a letra. It's good when someone post the lyrics in the comments.

@LSSTmusic

i'm no longer religious, and i think switchfoot has kind of turned into a shell of their former selves... but i can't deny that a lot of their earlier songs are not only extremely well-written, but there's real emotional depth there that is actually saying something. something that bothered me about contemporary christian music the whole time i listened to that kind of music was that it was all sterile, stripped of what makes us human. yes, the goal is to express praise or whatever, but i can't help but feel like you would want to put real effort into the things you're making for the thing you claim is the most important thing in your life.

idk, just some thoughts. very good song.
