Where I Belong
Switchfoot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feeling like a refugee
Like you don't belong to me
The colors flash across the sky

This air feels strange to me
Feeling like a tragedy
I take a deep breath and close my eyes
One last time
One last time

Storms on the wasteland
Dark clouds on the plains again
We were born into the fight

But I'm not sentimental
This skin and bones is a rental
And no one makes it out alive

Until I die I'll sing these songs
On the shores of Babylon
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Where the weak are finally strong
Where the righteous right the wrongs
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Feels like we're just waiting, waiting
While are hearts are just breaking, breaking
Feels like we've been fighting against the tide

I wanna see the earth start shaking
I wanna see a generation
Finally waking up inside

Until I die I'll sing these songs
On the shores of Babylon
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Where the weak are finally strong
Where the righteous right the wrongs
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong
A world where I belong

This body's not my home
This world is not my own
But I still can hear the sound
Of my heart beating out
So let's go boys, play it loud

And on that final day I die
I want to hold my head up high
I want to tell you that I tried
To live it like a song

And when I reach the other side
I want to look you in the eye
And know that I've arrived
In a world where I belong
In a world where I belong
In a world where I belong
Where I belong
Where I belong
Where I belong

Where I belong

I still believe we can live forever
You and I we begin forever now
Forever now
Forever
I still believe in us together
You and I we're here together now
Together now
Forever now
Forever now
Forever now

Overall Meaning

The first stanza starts with the singer feeling like a refugee, like he doesn't belong or fit in with the world. The colors flash across the sky, but the air feels strange to him. He feels like a tragedy and takes a deep breath and closes his eyes one last time. This can be interpreted as him letting go of his past and accepting the present.

The second stanza talks about being born into a fight, but the singer isn't sentimental. This skin and bones are just a rental, and no one makes it out alive. Until the singer dies, he will sing these songs on the shores of Babylon, still looking for a home in a world where he belongs. This is a powerful message because the singer continues to search for a place where he feels he belongs, even if that place doesn't necessarily exist.

The chorus highlights the singer's desire to find a home where the weak are finally strong, and the righteous right the wrongs. He's still looking for a place where he belongs, and this indicates that he hasn't found it yet. However, he continues to hold onto hope that such a place exists.

The final stanza talks about the singer's desire to hold his head up high on the final day he dies. He wants to tell people he tried to live his life like a song. He wants to look people in the eye when he reaches the other side and know that he's arrived in a world where he belongs. Again, this emphasizes the importance of finding a place where one feels they belong and are accepted.

I lost my wife this year this past March. Cancer. 37 years of marriage. My best friend by far. I spent three months trying to decide how to keep going. Then, somehow I decided to see about seeing Collective Soul in concert after listening to Run. Then there was Switchfoot touring with them. I knew a couple of their songs mainly from Pandora, but that was about it. So, in order to prepare for seeing them with Collective Soul, I started listening. And I was floored. Never in my life have I found such relevant music for me. Song after song. It's like I wasn't supposed to find them until now, in 2022, when I needed them most. What a blessing.

I lost my best friend/wife of almost 22 years December 25 of 2015. Had a 14 year old and a 17 year old. If it weren't for the greatest therapy of all, music, we would have had such despair! My daughters immersed themselves with music with school and personal life. But of course without my faith, I'd be a basket case. So thankful for these artist that help us keep focus! Hang in there my brother!

Curt Benson

@Mark Blan thank you. I wish you the best on your journey.

Dragon Slayer Grandma-

So sorry for your loss.
I lost my son two months ago to suicide. Sending you love and peace.

@Dragon Slayer Grandma- thank you, Tammy. I'm very sorry for your loss. Losing a child, including adult children, is difficult to process, and especially when it seems preventable. We lost our oldest daughter almost 6 years ago to addiction. My wife and I were raising her 4 kids. Now it's just me trying to do it. We had each other to get through it, though. Unexpectedly, losing my wife has been worse for me. Way worse.

Captin Murr

Switchfoot really has the potential to be a much more popular band. They deserve it too. I mean, just listen to their music
