1) Sybil (born as Sybil Lynch in Paterson, N.J.) is an American R&B/pop singer, an excellent vocalist and one of the finest among disco divas, who has been recording since 1986.
She is best known for her covers of Dionne Warwick's hits "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By".
However, it was when she signed with the music UK producers Stock Aitken Waterman on label PWL, that Sybil had the biggest success, and was particularly popular in the UK. She had two massive hit in 1993: The first, a West End production of "The Love I Lost", originally a hit for Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, and the second, "When I'm Good And Ready", an original song written by Mike Stock and Pete Waterman after Matt Aitken had left the company.
Her most successful album was also released that year: "Good n Ready". The same year, her US album Doin' It Now was released.
Most of Sybil's hits have been covers of standards, and her career gradually evolved from dance towards soul/pop. Her last single to date was released in 1997.

@TheOhYeahKid no. DID is a mental disorder caused by repeated and severe childhood trauma before the age of 10 years old. As babies, we are born with different ego-states such as “I need food” “I need attention” “I need sleep” etc. In regular development, these ego states integrate during the ages of 7-9, and solidify as one full personality at the age of 10 as a natural part of neurological development.

But, if a child is subjected to repeated trauma such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, ritual/religious abuse, natural disasters, homelessness, severe poverty, war, medical trauma, or accidents, sometimes the child dissociates and the ego states can’t integrate.
Amnesia barriers go up between the ego states as a protection mechanism the brain created to hide itself from traumatizing memories. These ego states develop into “parts”.

There will be 2 types of parts, Emotional Parts (EP) who hold the trauma meteorites, and Apparently Normal Parts (ANP) who have no memory of the trauma. ANP are usually the parts or “personalities” that go on with every day life when the child grows up. However, parts shouldn’t be called “personalities” since the individual doesn’t have “multiple personalities”, but fragmented pieces of what would have been a full personality.

These autonomous parts play different roles and jobs either related to daily life or trauma. There are also psychobiological differences between these parts. They can have different vision, medication responses, mild allergies, plasma glucose levels in diabetics, heat rate, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, muscle tension, body temperature, and immune function. When parts take turns being in control of the body, or switching, this causes headaches. This is because the blood flow of the brain changes direction when a different part fronts. Parts are autonomous states of consciousness, who can have different attitudes, preferences, personality traits, and opinions.

In DID, these parts have different distinct identities. These are called alters. Alters can have different names, sexes, sexual orientations, ages/emotional maturity, and perception of physical appearance like hair, skin color, body shape, and eye color. In DID, when switches occur between alters, there’s amnesia, like in childhood. Causing Alter A not remembering what Alter B was doing for example.

OSDD-1A however is similar to DID. It uses the exact same science. Except there aren’t alters, since all the parts share the same identity or have different versions of the same identity. It’s the exact same as DID, minus the difference in identities between parts.

OSDD-1B is similar to DID as well. It’s the exact same as DID, except there is no amnesia in switching in every day life like in DID/OSDD-1A. In OSDD-1B, there is only amnesia in trauma history, but not in switching in every day life. Causing Alter A to remember what Alter B was doing.

DID/OSDD-1 is the most complex form of PTSD. They are very hard disorders to live with, and systems (people with DID/OSDD-1) have been demonized in the media as serial killers and so on. People with Psychological Multiplicity are not dangerous at all. We’re survivors.

While DID, OSDD-1a and OSDD-1b definitely aren’t common, they aren’t rare disorders either. DID affects 1-3% or the world population, meaning it affects a little over 100 million people in 7.8 billion. Since OSDD-1 uses the same science as DID, and are the same disorders at the core, it’s safe to say it’s just as common. Though DID has a very high suicide rate, neighboring Depression, Gender Dysphoria etc. Systems have already endured enough trauma.

When it comes to how many parts a person can have, it all just depends on how many parts the child needed to survive. Some systems consist of only 1 parts, others have hundreds upon hundreds Some even have thousands.

So... yeah. That’s psychological multiplicity in a nutshell for you. DID (and OSDD-1a/1b) are very real disorders despite what misinformed people say.

During the time that Dr. Wilbur was living in Lexington Kentucky she diagnosed the mother of a friend of mine as having multiple personalities. The family discontinued treatment because they felt the therapy sessions were misguided. Dr. Wilbur had the reputation by then (around 1980) of an attention seeker who was always looking for another Sybil.

It upset me that Debbie Nathan entitled her book Sybil Exposed. I think a much better title would have been Dr. Wilbur Exposed! Shirley Mason was a victim and with this new information many people talk as though Shirley did something wrong when she was only looking for help. There is evidence that proves Shirley Mason had an abusive childhood and that she was disturbed, that she did show signs before being treated by Dr. Wilbur of a dissociative disorder. This is different than having DID and I believe Dr. Wilbur made it worse by suggestion and Shirley, finally getting the love and attention she needed, believed every word and action of Cornelia Wilbur to be true. Wilbur wasn't just Shirley's therapist she became her mother. She was obsessed with her and turned her into who she wanted her to be. They even lived together! After living half her life in loneliness and instability is it any wonder that Shirley clung to Cornelia with dependency and without question?

@I love SteveClark I believe that Shirley Mason (Sybil) had a dissociative disorder. I believe that she was abused and suffered from childhood trauma. I base this on historical research, interviews from those who knew her throughout her life and accounts from Shirley Mason herself.
A dissociative disorder is different than DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) or MPD as it used to be called. I believe that both are very real. Both have been medically and scientifically proven, both are in the DMV.
I also believe that Shirley Mason was used and brainwashed by an unethical psychiatrist who was overzealous, who wanted her to have DID and who wanted a daughter not to mention, a lot of recognition and fame.
In the end, all of the bad has to be weighed against the fact that Shirley did get better, was able to lead an independent life as a teacher and an artist, an author. Her story which became the fictional "Sybil" taught millions the unspeakable realities that child abuse can cause. It also depicted a very real case of DID.
I believe that in light of all of this Nathan should have left well enough alone. But it isn't the first time that this author has shown up to do more harm than good in "debunking" someone's story of pain.

E Louise I stand corrected. The speculation in the book was indeed B12 deficiency. I think she was ( mis) diagnosed with anemia at some point, because I remember being shocked that they’d be ok with eating liver but saw the sense of it.

My book is stowed away in the basement, or else I’d look it up. But I remember the word “ anemia “ being tossed out, and I am now thinking it may have been a hasty diagnosis by the town doctor.

I think it's important to recognize in cases like these that you can't disprove someone else's experiences. You can find proof that memories are false, but unless you find specific evidence of them lying you can't disprove the fact that they experience their self as being more than one person. Sybil probably wasn't abused in the way she believed she was, but I think there's a really good chance that she truly did experience herself as several different people, and that her memories were just as real as if they had been based on actual events.

One thing I think should be talked about more is people who experience what might be called DID but don't experience distress over it. The main diagnostic criteria for any mental illness is distress or impairment of normal function. Because of that, these people don't really meet the criteria for the disorder despite experiencing a lot of the same stuff as people with the disorder do. I'm not really the most well versed on this topic, but I believe these people call themselves multiple systems.

I was unaware she had come to the conclusion that she was diagnosed incorrectly. Wow! That is so very sad and tragic. Mason was having ghastly hallucinations and Wilbur convinced her they were memories. The one time Wilbur took an extended leave and sent Shirley to another interim doctor, by the time Wilbur came back Shirley had started becoming aware of the ways she was deluded. This provoked the famous “rebellious integration “ depicted in the book/ movie.

Although the book "Sybil" was very influential in spreading the awareness of multiple personalities, "The Three Faces of Eve" predated it by years, being published in the 1950s. And it too was made into a film, starring Joanne Woodward as Eve, the MPD person. Notice that Joanne was then cast as the psychiatrist who treated "Sybil" in the TV film, which was an acknowledgement of her having performed as the other person in the dramatization of the similar, earlier case.

You're right she was. And she shouldn't have been. People like happy endings, especially in movies but the healing process with DID is different for everyone. Through therapy Ms. Sizemore reached a point where she was at peace with her past, able to cope with having DID, she wasn't triggered anymore in a way that would cause her to behave destructively towards herself or others... On the screen or in exaggerated media this looks like someone who is "cured" but in reality the difference between healing and still living with DID is more complicated than an award winning film.

Yes, her name was Chris Sizemore. She wrote her own book(s) I believe on her life and diagnosis. DID cannot be cured only treated and Ms. Sizemore did experience healing over many years of therapy. She eventually lived as normal and happy a life as possible. Some of her original doctors did try to take advantage of her diagnosis I believe by sensationalizing it before she was well and able to consent to publicity. Including persuading her to sign away certain rights for "The Three Faces of Eve". However, the way Ms. Sizemore comes across in interviews she is not sorry that the story of her diagnosis, the first well documented diagnosis of DID, helped so many who do have it.

Regardless of what Shirley's diagnosis was, it is a tragedy that she suffered so greatly in her life. She was the victim of the political times of psychiatry. A lot does have much to do with the notion that a woman suffering from hysterics may not be truly comfortable with the maternal nature of her own personal self - specifically how it relates to societal norms. These are very old fashioned notions that often still prevail today. Shirley Mason's memory should be remembered, and she should finally rest in peace.

Did a very interesting study into DID and concluded that while people definitely can disassociate, it's far less radical than how it is portrayed in the media. These people are usually highly fragile and suggestible, and after poor therapy can believe false memories or even pushed to believe there separate behaviours are different identities. Basically how you treat a mental disorder has changed a lot since the 1970s, we know not to push concepts onto patients. For example in India, people who believe they have DID change identity after sleep, but in the US it's random. Very susceptible to social influence.

You "did a very interesting study" and now you're an expert? DID exists on a spectrum with those severely affected and those who are able to maintain a semblance of normality. No one has to convince a person who truly has DID that something is wrong. They are already struggling and oftentimes very frightened. I have been diagnosed with DID. I am highly intelligent (a characteristic of DID sufferers) as evidenced by my writing and communication skills and I am very strong-willed. I am not fragile nor suggestible. I'm a survivor of on-going early childhood sexual abuse and violence that began before the age of 4. Read the manual on mental health diagnoses for Pete's sake! Therapy has been very helpful for me, but I suffered prolonged symptoms while I was being treated by a psychiatrist who refused to believe that DID was real. I now see a trauma-informed therapist who has at least eased my feeling of isolation at suffering from a malady that for some reason is so controversial. It's a thing. Deal with it. My God, it's bad enough that we have been victimized by our own parents as small children, but then having to listen to this arrogant crap is just too much! DID is the most extreme form of ptsd. It is the result of extreme early childhood trauma and is the mind's way of allowing children to escape the unthinkable. You are not an expert. You seem incapable of realizing that people with DID are suffering. We are people. Not some fictional show you enjoy on television. This entire conversation disgusts me.

Totally this I remembered the abuse and even found proof of it outside of therapy I only talked about it in therapy.

I never call myself different names I just space out and it feels like looking through someone else's eyes and afterwards I don't remember anything.

Ema Hansen People in the DID community can tell when someone hasn't done all their homework. You use the term dissAssociate. There is no A in the middle of dissociate. It's Dissociative Identity Disorder. Don't feel bad, people who are mental health professional's make the same mistake. At least you know enough not to call it multiple personalities. Compared to those who deny the existence of the disorder, you're quite a few steps ahead. Study more and you can start to dispel the myths about therapist induced traumatic memories being implanted. Very few therapist's treat the disorder after the false memory scares of the past. Those still willing to work with DID are very careful to follow treatment guidelines for the most part. Not that bad eggs aren't still around, but ask people with DID and most will tell you the therapist had nothing to do with planting traumatic memories. My therapist rarely let's me talk about the traumas in the past yet. That can be year's down the road in therapy if you follow the ISSTD treatment guidelines. If you don't know what ISSTD stands for, you have some more homework to do. There are studies you can read, but not many. Not a lot of research has been done because of a lack of funding. But do some deeper research and you'll find the iotrogenic myth has been dispelled. Just don't tell the people that still believe in the false memory syndrome. They're on a weird witch hunt to disprove the fact that young children are being abused. Makes you wonder about the reason why? I don't comment on their content. I appeal only to those with open minds to do further study. Your mind is open so I hope you'll go to the ISSTD and do further studying. It's a good website.

That’s not true. No she doesn’t. Sally field is an actress, a mother and an activist. She had a rough childhood, where she experienced horrific sexual abuse by her stepfather for about ten years. Started when she was 4:/ Most abuse survivors instinctively compartmentalize different parts of their personality well, as part of survival. Everybody does it on different levels, survivor or not. But abuse survivors do it more. Everyone’s different tho. Her book explains everything. She’s a remarkable lady with a good head on her shoulders. But her sad childhood doesn’t define her. I think her family and her career does. She’s amazing. Legend. 👏🏻

I have DID (currently under limited control with a team of docs). It's not separate personalities but a fractured state. Under extreme stress a shift can occur and I will have no memory of what occurred after until I'm back. I've moved 2,000 miles without a memory of having done so. That's DID. It's definitely scary but it's not actually other "personalities" and they don't have names. It's just the ability to separate oneself to an unusual level, at will or sometimes not. The separation was a protective measure against violent long term abuse. It just lingers though it's no longer necessary. Disassociation is the best way to describe it.

It's different for everyone. I was diagnosed with DID two years ago and have seven alters but they have names. I only seem to switch when I feel threatened or stressed, and it hasn't been very often. It's different for every person.

Dr. Wilbur was inappropriate, did not keep the healthy boundries you would expect a doctor to keep. I see transference and also i see betrayal bonding, and abuse of these rules to gain power. I have never sat in the arms of any of my therapists nor have they ever called me sweetie. That is just not respectful or acceptable. Under these circumstances how is it possible that Shirley would have been able to heal and fully integrate?

I had a Psychiatrist that I do not think I needed to see in the first place, try something like this with me. Told me I was very very sick. And was too close physically. He got close to me standing up as I left and looked up and down at me and said I'm getting to be so tall. I was so confused and it was blurry. I literally felt I was separating from my consciousness. I walked out in the rain to my car and and may have been saying my name but I could not hear it. I did not feel right for 3 days after.

And I just said the first name that popped into my head..." Wow, this lady could have stopped that charade at the start. i had a traumatic childhood that was like the one described (fictional or not) in SYBIL..while I never came close to being a "multiple", I do believe, no, I KNOW that my personality was (55 now) and still is partially fractured. I think there are more people suffering with this, I think it would be better to label it a form of PTSD.

Yes, you are correct that it is PTSD. And correct also that many people suffer with this; it's just not something that is put out on the street so to speak. EMDR might be of help to you but you'd need to be evaluated to see if EMDR would be an appropriate form of treatment for you. I wish you well♥

So um actually after having gone through several years of the doctor gambit I was diagnosed with PTSD and some other crap and then later diagnosed with DID (dissociated identity disorder). In order to be diagnosed with this you haft to go through multiple steps and it's in no way guided. It's so weird listening to the tapes and comparing them to my own experiences at therapy. My therapist who specializes in this does say that everyone is made up of multiple "parts" in a way but most people even under a crap ton of stress/trauma will not develop DID though it's not as uncommon as you think. It's mostly found in women bc the men usually off themselfs, get incarcerated when they are younger, never are able to seek treatment/get diagnosed properly

It's hard to take DR. Wilber seriously, as for starters, instead of publishing a paper for peer review, she contacted a writer of fiction & enriched herself at her client's expense.

Secondly, there has been much debate on if MPD & Hypnosis are "wish fulfilment instead of actual mental states.

Lastly, it was noted that Wilber asked leading questions, which could plant false memories.

While I also question Dr. Wilber, at the time, being a woman in a field dominated by men, she would have been laughed at before she even gave proof (if there were any). If she provided hard evidence and made her case beyond any doubt, one of the men with a psychiatric doctorate would have taken credit for it all. Maybe she was trying to preserve what she firmly believed was her own discovery. The rest of the whole book ordeal and such, however, leaves her credibility to be questioned.

In my experience (I have DID) It's exceedingly rare, most people have DDNOS or are trauma victims encouraged by DID support groups and sometimes doctors to expand upon their trauma to the point of dissociating more and more so it appears like DID, but is still very different.

It's also no longer under debate or called MPD. As it has been explained to me, the reason it is so rare is because a certain amount of constant not normally survivable trauma has to be done again and again at such a young age in such a consistent fashion that the personality does not solidify as it is supposed to do, to such a degree, that the brain multiplies as a coping mechanism. Most people don't survive that amount of trauma, and those that do the abuse were often sexual which is why they survived it.

We make up hypothetically 1 % of the population though that is mostly likely more like 2-3 % because the disorder is good at hiding.

=-= I can tell you I developed mine without knowing it even was a thing, without knowing I even had it until I did, without any involvement from doctors. It was the product of severe, sexual, emotional, physical abuse coupled with numerous amounts of traumatic experiences that fall into nonabusive trauma categories.

@Cecilia Leon Debbie Nathan has a very strange history of "discrediting" and debunking these kinds of cases. Especially where childhood abuse and sexual abuse took or allegedly took place. And it didn't just start with Shirley Mason.
You can find Debbie Nathan's career in this all the way back in the 1980s when she tried to say that children were lying about being molested by their teachers during the The McMartin preschool trial.
It just seems very bizarre to me that wherever there are/were big media cases of abuse with possible controversy Nathan shows up and not to defend the victim. What does she have to gain from this? Or does she have un-dealt with issues of her own?

We give him credit where credit is due for his late input on hypnosis but now we move forward. I can never look at it again, simply because those directors and real family allowed that child to be an actor being abused and yet the little girl really was being abused during her part of the movie. Even if Jani truly has childhood schizophrenia, her brother Bodhi has never been diagnosed, despite their mother’s doctor shopping for the past decade. The two children—Bodhi in particular—is overly medicated, and it is the most repugnant thing to witness. If he truly requires medication, it is obvious (to not just regular viewers, but medical professionals), that he experiences absent seizures and stupor from the side effects of heavy dosages of a combination of medications. In any event, schizophrenia does have a genetic link, but identical twins who have one sufferer have suggested the condition is multifactorial, and environment plays a significant role too.

It is true DID presents after childhood trauma (usually sexual abuse), but it is thought there may be a genetic component because dissociative disorders can run in families. It’s obviously still in its infancy regarding research, but the same goes for genetic predispositions of other mental health issues too.

My good friend suffered from DID but, yeah, it wasn’t like MPD. She would black out and lose time, forgetting entire conversations. But she didn’t seem like a different person or anything. And she actually did experience trauma in her childhood that might have caused something like that to re-emerge during adult stresses. Fortunately, she only ended up on one medication: lexapro to treat depression.

Ok so MPD was renamed as DID in the 90s and since then the diagnosis and treatment is better. You haft to keep in mind that part of the reason why she didn't seem like a different person is because DID is a defence mechanism. When I switch you can barely tell the difference unless I let a person know or you can tell the subtle differences in body language but you haft to really be looking. That goes for most people with the disorder.

I have no idea if Sybil had DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) previously called Multiple Personality disorder and I'm sure there are people wrongly diagnosed, as is the case with many disorders but it most certainly does exist. I think there are more people with it that go undiagnosed than are wrongly diagnosed to be honest.

DID is not like it is in the movie. Child alters often don't put on a babyish voice and alters usually don't switch as quickly. It's very headache inducing.

It's actually believed that DID has a higher occurrence (1.2% to 3% of the population) than more known illnesses like schizophrenia. Countries at war tend to have a lot of children with DID because of the constant destruction they see, and it absolutely traumatizes them.

People diagnosed with DID are also in the mental health care system for an average of 7 years before being correctly diagnosed.

As someone currently studying Psychology (and thinking of pursuing Psychiatry), I found this “Dr.” incredibly inappropriate. The exact reason why people refuse to get the help they need (and deserve). You should be able to trust and confide in your doctor unapologetically without their personal interference and vendettas. It really spooked me, however as an abused child myself I can understand the way someone can sink into a ‘fantasy existence’ to survive, I know I did, but I didn’t sink into other personalities. My Mom has this book. 📕 I remember being intrigued by the cover as a kid. Once I became and an adult, I came across her book again and read it from cover to cover. A few years ago, I saw the movie 🎥. Such a fascinating subject. I hope the real Syble found peace at last.

One of the key aspects of Sybil's particular case that was included in the book but not in the movie, was the fact that Mason had no memory of the time when these other "personalities" took over. This was not discovered during hypnosis sessions. It was one reason she went to a psychiatrist to begin with-- because she kept losing time. She'd "wake up" on a bus and have no idea where she was going, what she was doing. She would go days without remembering anything. It turned out another personality had taken over. But this was discovered during regular sessions, when the personalities revealed themselves, not during hypnosis. In fact, the only thing covered in the hypnosis sessions were early traumatic memories.

It seems to me other doctors, anxious to find their own "MPD" patient afterwards, might have influenced their patients, coaching them and misdiagnosing them. For instance, by putting them under hypnosis (with or without drug therapy) but I know Dr. Wilbur didn't.

Lumping Sybil together with many dubious cases and saying none of them were real is as over zealous and misleading as diagnosing everyone as having MPD. It is rare, but it does happen. But, as with any condition, there are key symptoms that must be part of it to be a verifiable case. I believe Sybil's was.

I’m always fascinated with learning abt DID and watching people who have it. It’s so sad they all experienced severe trauma as children which leads to them developing multiple personalities. The human brain is full of wonders.

YOOO!!! When I was a kid my mom used to always threaten me with “Don’t make me bring Sybil Out”. I NEVER had any idea what she meant thought it was just another one of her many many black mom sayings. So now I finally know. 25 years later what meant. I’m 31 😂

As a retired clinician, I've always been fascinated by Disassociative Identity Disorder.
I agree that the early treatment relied to heavily on suggestions from the therapist. We know better now to avoid planting false memories, especially in forensic cases.

I was diagnosed with MPD years ago because I suffered from Disassociation.
But I was never MPD and I knew that. Which goes to prove that Doctors can make egregious errors in judgment. I learned to disassociate as a child to get away from a bad childhood.
I still do it today but much less frequently and have learned to face the reality of most situations. When I do disassociate, I just become completely numb of feeling and physicality and sit, sometimes for hours.
