Winners of the Canterbury Best Local Band competition they eventually adopted the fitting name Syd Arthur — the "Syd" bit because of Barrett and "Arthur" with its intimations of the Kinks' album Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire). They created their own recording space, Wicker Studios, in 2009, and released their first EP the following year.
There are traces of folk and world music in their sound, as well as some of the intricacies of jazz and the rhythms of dance — which the band themselves call "psychedelic funk rock".
Their music is unique and quite unlike anything else. Over the last five years the band have constantly played gigs and festivals, patiently evolving their sound with a clarity of intention and a spirit of exploration and building up a strong following over the similarly devoted.

Syd Arthur Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There was a clear new start
Longing for life
Mountains of sorrow
Evolution
Evolution
Who do you trust?
Who do you know to trust?
Mountains of sorrow
Maybe tonight...
Maybe tomorrow...
Evolution
Evolution
Who do you know?
Who do you care to know?
Longing for life
Mountains of sorrow
Maybe tonight...
Maybe tomorrow...
Who do you love?
The lyrics to Syd Arthur's song "Evolution" reflect on the idea of change and growth, as well as the accompanying longing and sorrow that comes with it. The first verse starts with the description of something being "drifted apart," which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the end of something and the beginning of a new phase. There is a "clear new start" that is being longed for, which shows that the change is desired despite the accompanying "mountains of sorrow." The chorus repeats the word "evolution," which is the overarching theme of the song - the concept of growth and change.
The second and third verses delve deeper into the idea of trust and relationships during times of change. The singer asks the listener, "who do you trust?" and "who do you know to trust?" while also questioning, "who do you know?" and "who do you care to know?" These lines suggest that during times of evolution, trust and relationships are tested and it can be hard to know who to turn to. Despite this uncertainty, the longing for life remains and the possibility of change is embraced with the hope that maybe "tonight... maybe tomorrow... who do you love?"
Overall, "Evolution" is a reflective song that explores the complexities of change and the emotions that come with it, showcasing the struggle to navigate relationships and trust during times of evolution.
