Dark Globe
Syd Barrett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?
When I was alone you promised the stone from your heart
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please, lift a hand
I'm only a person whose armbands beat
On his hands, hang tall
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
The poppy birds way
Swing twigs coffee brands around
Brandish her wand with a feathery tongue
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please, please lift the hand
I'm only a person with Eskimo chain
I tattooed my brain all the way
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
The lyrics to Syd Barrett's Dark Globe are enigmatic, but they reflect the songwriter's descent into mental illness. The opening line "Oh where are you now, pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?" can be interpreted as a reference to a lost connection or relationship, possibly with someone who offered solace or refuge. The image of a smiling pussy willow perched on a leaf is both strange and poignant, and suggests a certain fragility and vulnerability.
The next lines "When I was alone you promised the stone from your heart" are cryptic, but imply a promise of love or protection. The singer then says "My head kissed the ground, I was half the way down, treading the sand," indicating a sense of being lost or nearly defeated. He then pleads, "Please, please, lift a hand, I'm only a person whose armbands beat on his hands, hang tall. Won't you miss me? Wouldn't you miss me at all?" These lines suggest a desperation for attention or affection, and the image of armbands beating on hands may symbolize a struggle against inner demons.
The rest of the song continues in a similarly surreal and disjointed vein, with references to poppy birds, swinging twigs, coffee brands, and feathery wands. The lines "I'm only a person with Eskimo chain, I tattooed my brain all the way" suggest a kind of alienation or disconnection, with the singer tattooing his brain as if trying to find a sense of identity or purpose. The final plea "Won't you miss me? Wouldn't you miss me at all?" echoes throughout the song, conveying a desperate need for recognition and validation.

you can tell that Bowie was deeply inspired by Syd.

He said it himself

@@edanpaz3458 what do you think about his cover of See Emily Play on the Pin Ups record?
@Timmitous
@@madvincent9647 I know you didn't ask me but I prefer Syd's "See Emily Play".

Space Oddity is just a more comercial The Madcap Laughs ( i love both albums, but Syd is more inaccessible)

The way that he pauses before the second "treading the sand" is just brilliant. His timing sense was incredible.
@williamreynolds4435
He plays with time and phrasing in ways that wouldn't really be possible with a full band. Maybe Syd would've been happier with just himseld and his guitar. Or maybe he would've happily chucked it all for a career as a painter.
@mynameismark25
i think you're both looking too much into it. This was probably the best version of many terrible takes and as for the pauses, my guess is he's trying to remember the lyrics or reading them from a piece of paper.
@worldwidehey
Very well put. Then his “PLEEEEASE”. What a song
