FEEL
Syd Barrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You feel me
Away far too empty, oh so alone
I want to go home
Oh find me inside of a nocturne, the blonde
How I love you to be by my side
They wail the crowd on her side
She straggled the bridge by the water
She misses her crawl far ley grew
Heady aside in a dell
Inside an eye be the lonely one, my bride
How I leave on the waddling wheel they fail
A gasp shringing, a bad bell's ringing
The angel, the daughter

You feel me
Away far too empty, oh so alone
I want to come home
Oh find me inside of a nocturne, the blonde
How I love you to be by my side

They wail the crowd on her side
She straggled the bridge by the water

Overall Meaning

The song "Feel" by Syd Barrett is a deeply emotional and slightly surreal exploration of loneliness and the longing for connection. The opening lines "You feel me / Away far too empty, oh so alone / I want to go home" immediately set the tone of the song. The singer feels disconnected from the world, longing for a sense of home and belonging. The next line "Oh find me inside of a nocturne, the blonde" adds a dreamlike quality to the lyrics. Nocturnes are musical compositions that evoke a feeling of night or darkness, and the mention of a blonde figure adds to the surreal nature of the image.

The next couple of lines introduce a different character, "They wail the crowd on her side / She straggled the bridge by the water." This could be interpreted as the singer observing someone else who is also struggling with their own sense of loneliness and alienation. The line "She misses her crawl far ley grew" adds to the ambiguity and dreamlike quality of the lyrics, as it doesn't quite make logical sense.

The rest of the song continues with similar surreal and emotional imagery. The lines "Inside an eye be the lonely one, my bride / How I leave on the waddling wheel they fail / A gasp shringing, a bad bell's ringing / The angel, the daughter" paint a picture of someone desperately searching for love and companionship, but ultimately feeling lost and alone.

Overall, "Feel" by Syd Barrett is a haunting and poetic exploration of the human longing for connection and the pain of feeling isolated and misunderstood.

Syd wasn't depressed. He FELT differently. Not everybody wants to be a huge rock star, live in a jet, and sell trillions of albums. Sometimes they want to live in their childhood home, make art, and have a cat. He didn't have as many albums as Pink Floyd, or make millions of dollars. But he left behind two amazing works of art, in the vein of Lord Byron with a guitar, yet people are still in love with the myth of 'crazy Syd'. Quite sad really.

Thank you

@johngrayatkinson1214

While most of that is true.
Syd was a soul that carried alot of luggage.
He was sad, and he was lost.
The drugs didn't help either. In fact they turned on him.
He was an amazing artist who gave us some beautiful work
Rest In Peace Syd ( for all who suffer with mental health REST being the key word and PEACE being the catalyst to that)

Sounds like me! Introverted genius 🤷🏻‍♂️

@blacksabbathmatters3365

I think Syd just wanted to create music with his mates.
He didn't care about being rich and famous. Roger was the one who pushed Syd beyond what he wanted to accomplish.

One of the greatest artists ever. Eternal love for Syd...

When Syd doesn't sing for the 3rd verse and all you hear is his acoustic, it's STILL so amazingly stirring. Even when he play simple major and minor chords, his otherworldly rhythmic sense and incredible dynamics take it to another level.

I would consider this the most beautiful pop tune ever written. Its almost intimidating in its excellence.

@jamesheath7601

Syd was brilliant. He had a lovely singing voice and wrote great songs.
