Rats
Syd Barrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got it hit down
Spot knock inside a spider
Says: "That's love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!"
"That's love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!"
Says: "That's love, all know it
TV, teeth, feet, peace, feel it
"That's love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!"
"That's love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!"

Like the fall that brings me to
I like the fall that brings me to
I like the cord around sinew
I make a cord around sinew

Duck, the way to least is less
Tea craving of the metal west
'ell tomorrow's rain and test
'ell tomorrow's rain and test
Love an empty son and guess
Love an empty son and guess
Pimples dangerous and blessed

Heaving, arriving, tinkling
Mingling jets and statuettes
Seething wet we meeting fleck
Seething wet we meeting fleck
Lines and winds and crib and half
Each fair day I give you half
Of each fair day I give you half
I look into your eyes and you,
Flathe in the sun for you

Bam, spastic, tactile engine
Heaving, crackle, slinky, dormy, roofy, wham
I'll have them, fried bloke
Broken jardy, cardy, smoocho, moocho, paki, pufftle
Sploshette moxy, very smelly,
Cable, gable, splintra, channel
Top the seam he's taken off

Rats, rats lay down flat
We don't need you, we act like that
And if you think you're un-loved
Then we know about that

Rats, rats, lay down flat!
Yes, yes, yes, yes, lay down flat!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Syd Barrett's "Rats" are complex and somewhat cryptic, and may require a bit of interpretation. The first lines, "Got it hit down, spot knock inside a spider," seem to suggest a sudden realization, with "spot knock" possibly implying a spark of insight. The repeated refrain "That's love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!" suggests a dismissal of societal expectations about what constitutes love, and implies a deeper, more instinctual understanding of the concept. The line "I make a cord around sinew" further reinforces this idea, implying a physical or biological connection between people.

The second verse is also a bit murky, with lines like "Duck, the way to least is less" and "Tea craving of the metal west" seeming nonsensical at first. However, they could be interpreted as commentary on modern society's obsession with progress and technology, and how it often leads to a dissatisfaction with the present moment. The repeated line "Love an empty son and guess" could suggest a feeling of emptiness or lack of fulfillment despite the trappings of success.

The final verse of the song is a bit surreal, with a list of nonsensical or made-up words that seem to imply a rejection of traditional language and communication. The repeated refrain "Rats, rats, lay down flat!" seems to be a call to shed societal expectations and constraints, and to embrace a more primal or instinctual way of living.

Overall, Syd Barrett's "Rats" is a somewhat enigmatic song that covers a lot of ground thematically. It touches on love, societal expectations, technology, and primal instincts, all while showcasing Barrett's unique and often unconventional approach to songwriting.

Syd had it, even when he didnt, Syd at his his worst is still better than anything off Dark Side or WIsh You Were, Syds musical appeal is that it lays somewhere between a garage rock anyone can do it approach and absolute conceptual noone can touch him genius.

@Syfoll What a vile comment. Who the hell do you think you are?? Do you own this site. Are you God's anointed one. You don't even make a point just act like a football hooligan in print and verbally assault someone for an opinion on a song!!. Why don't YOU go and fuck yourself DOUCHE!.

@LosHuxleys

Yes

@scottmooneyham5521

Yeah, yeah, yeah-ah yeah

@magua4

there are fantastic elements to syds later works. i imagine that the sounds he hears in his head are much more elaborate and flowing and that they don't quite the flow no matter what medium he would have used to create them. not like i think this is bad. i just think that if there was a way to transmute brain activity into music straight away, from one persons mind into a computer program or something.... that syd would be able to come up with the best stuff around

@carlosalicante37

Totally agreed . Vegetable man was the first punk song ever . But a punk song will never has lyrics like this . Syd was tooooo goooood

@ronwood355

Syd did not have the problems attributed to him as being mad ,he may have had some problem
But his ability as a writer and arranger shines thru , he lived in a world of words and music
We all miss syd
