Battle of Olympus (x4)
Way back in the warmth of '87
We don't fear a black night
As we live in the heaven
Close all the windows
As the sun goes down
(chorus)
I swear I saw a fairy in the back of your garden
But it was nothing at all for you to remember
Don't believe my eyes
Memories turn to lies
When they're changing sides
Cannot find the keys of my memory box
Tell the time to stop
Dry my teardrops
Where have you been?
I forgot what I've seen
Even in my dreams
Way back in the warmth of '87
We don't fear a black night
As we live in the heaven
Close all the windows
Put the TV on
As the sun goes down
I swear, I swear
(repeat chorus)
(repeat chorus)
Where have you been?
I forgot what I've seen
When I was a teen
The lyrics of Syd Matters's song Battle of Olympus are deeply nostalgic and contemplative of a particular moment in time. The opening line mentions '87, which could refer to the year 1987 or a time period associated with the 80s, a moment in history that is now associated with a great deal of nostalgia. The opening stanza talks about not fearing a black night and the notion of living in heaven, both of which could be seen as metaphors for a sense of security or comfort. The following stanza talks about putting on the TV as the sun goes down, a seemingly mundane activity that could be seen as a comforting ritual that is repeated every day.
The chorus is particularly poetic and touching, with the singer describing how he saw a fairy in the back of someone's garden, only for the person to not even remember the event. This could be interpreted in a number of ways, but could speak to the fleeting nature of memories and how people can experience the same thing very differently. The following line, "Don't believe my eyes, memories turn to lies when they're changing sides" speaks further to this theme of memory and how it can be deceptive. The final stanza speaks of forgetting what has been seen, even in dreams, and reinforces the notion that memory is a realm that is often difficult to understand or access.
Overall, Battle of Olympus is a song that is deeply personal and evocative, with lyrics that speak to the fleeting nature of memory and the passage of time. The song is beautifully composed with its poetic lyrics, haunting melody, and dreamy tones that easily transport the listener to a different place or time.
