Nobody
Sydney Devine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was slowly passing
An orphan's home one day,
I stopped for just a little while
To watch the children play.
Alone a boy was standing
And when I asked him why,
He turned with eyes that could not see
And he began to cry.

I'm nobody's child,
I'm nobody's child.
Just like the flowers
I'm growing wild.
I got no mummy's kisses
I got no daddy's smile.
Nobody wants me,
I'm nobody's child.

No mummy's arms to hold me
Or sue me when I cry,
'Cause sometimes I feel so lonesome
I wish that I could die.
I'll walk the streets of heaven
Where all blinds can see.

And just like for the other kids
It will be a home for me.

I'm nobody's child,
I'm nobody's child.
Just like the flowers
I'm growing wild.
I got no mummy's kisses
I got no daddy's smile.

Nobody wants me,
I'm nobody's child.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sydney Devine's song "Nobody's Child" tell a heartbreaking story about a young boy living in an orphanage who feels unloved and unwanted. The singer of the song, presumably an adult passerby, stops to watch the children play and notices the boy standing alone. When asked why he's crying, the boy responds by saying that he's "nobody's child" and doesn't have a mother or father to love him. He longs for the same affection and attention that other children receive from their families, but feels that he will never have it.

The boy's loneliness and despair are made even more poignant by the fact that he can't see. His blindness serves as a powerful symbol of his isolation and sense of being lost in the world. Yet despite his sadness, he still possesses a glimmer of hope that he will one day find a place where he belongs. He imagines walking the streets of heaven where all blinds can see, and where he will finally find a home where he is loved and wanted.

Overall, "Nobody's Child" is a heartbreaking song that speaks to the universal need for love and belonging. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and kindness, and the ways in which we can all make a difference in the lives of those around us.

I remember the first time I listened to this song during class back when I was in middle school (some 30 or so years ago). Our teacher taught us this song and got us to sing it. Has been stuck in my mind ever since.

First time to hear the vocals associated with the Song, Nobody's child. Written by Cy Coben and Mel Foree. I remember the days of being abandoned by my parents, but it did not define me. Instead, I found a hope in Christ at a very young age. In my time of confusion and loneliness, I was told HE IS(God) the "father to the fatherless." Not long after being awarded to the state, was placed with an AwEsOmE family! Psalms 68:5-6. What a mighty God to save a wretch like me!

@eriepoohpooh

jay natal It's funny how when life circumstances bring us to our knees, we reach out to a higher power. However, until then color within the lines of life, and I will hold up half the sky.

+jay natal I share your atheism but not your obvious lack of compassion...you're the one who needs to have a serious word with yourself..your comment is hardly humanist..just needlessly cruel..maybe it's you who needs to GROW UP.
