He had four top 40 hits in the UK and Europe in 1988 and 1989 including "Sit And Wait", "Id Rather Go Blind" and his debut "If Only I Could". "If Only I Could" used the bassline and drumbeat from the Raze house music classic "Break For Love" and reached number three on the charts - a position that would have been higher if not for the outstanding success of the then-current number one, Black Box (band)'s "Ride on Time".
In the US, the song "I'd Rather Go Blind" (originally sung by Etta James) enjoyed heavy rotation on the dance scene and made top 10 in the "Billboard Dance Charts". "Sit 'n' Wait" reached number 15 in the UK early in 1990.
Sydney continued his success with the album "Feeling Free" which also contained his earlier single "Ain't No Sunshine".

That you know you shouldn't have
The more you know you shouldn't have it,
The more you want it
And then one day you get it,
It's so good too
But it's just like my girl
When she's around me
But right now I just feel cold, so cold
Right down to my bones
'Cause oh
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, know, know, know, know,
I know, I know,
Hey I ought to leave
I ought to leave her alone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
The lyrics of "Ain't No Sunshine" by Sydney Youngblood speak of the pain and emptiness felt when the person you love is no longer present. The song begins with the singer lamenting how he wants something he knows he shouldn't have. He explains how the more he knows he shouldn't have it, the more he wants it. This is followed by him getting what he wants, and how it feels so good, but it's just like his girl when he is with her, he feels so good, but right now he feels cold and empty because she's gone.
Throughout the song, he expresses his feelings of darkness and emptiness that come with her absence. He wonders where she went and if she's ever coming back. He notes that there's no sunshine in his life when she's gone, and this house just isn't a home without her.
The constant repetition of "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" further emphasizes the pain he feels when his girl is not with him, and how everything feels incomplete when she's not around. The song gives a sense of longing, pain, and desperation that comes with the absence of the one you love.

You ever want something
Have you ever desired something with everything in you?
That you know you shouldn't have
Something that you are aware is not right for you?
The more you know you shouldn't have it,
The greater your awareness that said item is not in your best interests,
The more you want it
The more intense the desire for it grows in you?
And then one day you get it,
One day, you acquire that object of desire
It's so good too
And it feels amazing
But it's just like my girl
But, similar to my girl
When she's around me
Whenever she is around me
I just feel so good, so good
I feel ecstatic, so happy
But right now I just feel cold, so cold
However, I currently feel cold and empty inside
Right down to my bones
I feel this coldness in the depths of my being
'Cause oh
Because oh,
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
When she's gone, the light in my life disappears
It's not warm when she's away
Everything feels cold in her absence
And she's always gone too long
She is always absent for an excessively long time
Anytime she goes away
Whenever she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
I'm wondering this time where she could have gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
I question if she has gone forever
And this house just ain't no home
Without her presence, this house is nothing like a home
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, know, know, know, know,
I know, know, know, know, know
I know, I know,
I know, I know
Hey I ought to leave
Perhaps, I should be leaving
I ought to leave her alone
I should stay away from her
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
When she's gone, the light in my life disappears
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
When she's gone, the light in my life disappears
Only darkness every day
And every day is only filled with darkness
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
When she's gone, the light in my life disappears
And this house just ain't no home
Without her presence, this house is nothing like a home
Anytime she goes away
Whenever she goes away
