Mercado's mother, Zelda, is African-American and her father, José, is of Afro-Cuban descent. She grew up in Sarasota, Florida and graduated from Booker High School in 2005, where she was in the Theater VPA (Visual and Performing Arts) department. At the 2005 Florida Theatre Conference and the 2005 South Eastern Theater Conference Syesha won "Best Supporting Actress" for her role as the Sour Kangaroo in Seussical the Musical. Syesha also won Florida's Super Singer 2007.
She auditioned for American Idol Season 7 in Miami, Florida singing "Think" by Aretha Franklin where she made it to Hollywood with all three judges saying 'yes'. When she arrived in Hollywood she had lost her voice and insisted on going on vocal rest. She was seen communicating through pen and paper throughout the week. She sang "Chain of Fools" and was accepted into the top 24. Syesha finished as the last female in the competition and overall 3rd place, only losing out to David Archuleta and eventual winner David Cook.

@@Gonk BC her baby was on breast milk and wasn't getting enough so she put the baby on formula and he was taking it as well as a mother would want her baby too so the claim the offered vitamin b12 shot and she asked for them to wait until the child father to be there and they lied and said she refused I personally think they were trying to give their baby that jab and age caught their evil asses I'm like if that hospital kidnapped her 1st born Wtf would she go back there but this time we will help her fight !!!!

Same. I loved David Cook at the time, but damn, the judges did Syesha so wrong. They had it out for her....probably because they wanted to sway voters into voting for a David vs. David ending, which they succeeding in getting.
I felt so bad for Syesha when they finally complimented Syesha, and she broke down.
