Fool
Sylvia Sylvia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Romance is a game for fools"
I used to say
A game I thought I'd never play
"Romance is a game for fools"
I said and grinned
Then you passed by
And here am I
Throwing caution to the wind

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread
And so I come to you, my love, my heart above my head.
Though I see the danger there
If there's a chance for me, then I don't care

Mm-mm-mm-mm
Fools rush in where wise men never go
But wise men never fall in love, so how are they to know?
When we met, I felt my life begin
So open up your heart and let this fool rush in

Fools rush in where wise men never, never, never go
Eh, but wise men never fall in love, so how are they to know?
Ah, when we met, girl, I felt my life begin
So open up your heart and let this fool rush in

Just open up your heart and let this fool rush on in

Just open up your heart because I-I-I-I-I-I-I am coming in
Open up your heart and let this fool rush in!

Overall Meaning

The first few lines of Sylvia Syms song Fools Rush In, "Romance is a game for fools, I used to say, a game I thought I'd never play," sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer begins by acknowledging her previous apprehension towards love and romance, but it all fades away in the presence of the person she's addressing. "Then you passed by, and here am I throwing caution to the wind." The singer eventually decides to let her guard down and pursue romance, despite the potential risks and potential heartbreak involved, because she believes the risk is worth it.

The phrase "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" is a proverb that means one should not venture into dangerous or risky situations without taking proper precautions. The song acknowledges the potential dangers of love, but as the title suggests, sometimes "fools" such as the singer in the song rush in anyway, despite the risks.

Overall, the song is about taking chances and embracing the rush of emotions that come with love. It acknowledges that love can be risky and potentially foolish, but ultimately it's worth it to the characters in the song.

I discovered this song a few days ago and have played it countless times since. The lyrics are great and his singing on this version has a swing to it.

I've searched for this song for 50 years and I FINALLY found it! I remember hearing it every week on the Ian Tyson show, but all I could recall was "Aw honey, please be there when I get home". I was beginning to think that my memory was playing tricks with me. This song is just as good as I remember it. To me this song is the definition of Ian...those words always come to mind whenever I hear Ian's name.

rebecca milliken

One of the best voices ever.

14 years old and sing this song and okay guitar. Love it! Maybe I should do a cover even though I don’t like the sound of my own voice but who does?

This whole album and the Great Speckled Bird albums are by far my favorite Ian and Sylvia records.

Pat The Roving Brakeman

This song still gets plenty of air time on radio stations in Alberta and I love it.

Great quality original record. I know Ian did it later on a single, but this is the one I saw them do live at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach in '71 when it came out. Thanks!

I agree with you. David Nelson's voice had a nice, bluesy feel to it, but Ian gave it the BLUES. Perfection

Ian is 86 today-this is my favorite song of theirs.

I want to add, both albums are great, their version of Last Lonely Eagle tops the NRPS original by a mile.
