Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. Their music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band".
Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word 'Symphony' came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said 'Symphony X' and we were like, 'yeah, that's cool' it is that kinda thing, and the 'X' is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
The albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite were partially recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo's home studio. The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded there and produced by Romeo himself.

Gleaming rays awake the dawn
Here I stand, a stranger in this land
Does your conscience betray you?
Falling from grace
Feel the sun on my face
Does desire still hold true?
Does the hunter pity his pray
Under starless skies
All love must die and fade away
Take my hand, divine or damned
Make a stand, seize the day
Oh, yours or mine, damned of divine
Draw the line, come what may
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye
To paradise
My yearning is silenced by angelic skin of white
Love conquers all though heaven's fall
This fateful night
Oh, yours or mine, damned of divine
Draw the line, serpentine
Love is a tragedy
All that I have, all that I'll ever need
Is right here inside
Let the winds of freedom be my guide
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye
To paradise
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye
To paradise
Say goodbye, goodbye, horror.
So I've cheated and I've lied
Been the victim of foolish pride
And I've begged and I've crawled
And I've battled it and bled for it all
Now I'll savor the downfall
Of paradise
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all will say their last goodbye
To paradise
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all will say their last goodbye
To paradise
Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all will say their last goodbye
To paradise
The lyrics to Symphony X's song Paradise Lost express themes of longing, betrayal, love, and tragedy. The song begins in a cold and misty morning with the rising of the sun, and the singer (who is a stranger in this land) is standing there contemplating whether desire still holds true, and whether his conscience will betray him. He then sees the beauty of someone, and is mystified by it but also wonders if the hunter pities his prey or if all love must die under starless skies. The chorus speaks of making a stand and drawing the line, divine or damned, and yours or mine, and come what may.
The second verse speaks of looking down from ethereal skies, and the singer's yearning is silenced by someone's angelic skin of white. Love conquers all although heaven falls, and this is a tragedy even though everything he has he will ever need is right here inside. The bridge shift to cherishing the downfall of paradise after begging, crawling, and battling for it, and now the singer is savoring it. The song ends with the repeated chorus, looking down from the ethereal skies and crying crystalline tears for all who must say their last goodbye to Paradise.

@@cantonnierbethcepourlavhy6343 you just can't compare, led zeppelin isn't a metal band and stairway to heaven isn't even a power ballad. Too different
@IIBloodXLustII
@@cantonnierbethcepourlavhy6343 Please, everyone has heard Stairway to Heaven. Even pop stations will play it every once in a while.
