Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. Their music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band".
Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word 'Symphony' came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said 'Symphony X' and we were like, 'yeah, that's cool' it is that kinda thing, and the 'X' is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
The albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite were partially recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo's home studio. The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded there and produced by Romeo himself.

Symphony X Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
qua resurget ex favilla
judicandus homo reus
"..tainted memories of Balance lost, forever
bury the truth of all unity..."
The first stanza of the lyrics references the Latin hymn "Lacrimosa," which translates to "full of tears" or "tearful." The hymn is often used in funeral settings and laments the day of judgment when humans will be judged for their actions. Symphony X's usage of "Lacrimosa" in their song title and lyrics sets the tone for a mournful and foreboding theme.
The second stanza delves into the idea of Balance lost, tainted memories, and burying the truth of unity. There seems to be a sense of regret and sadness about how something was lost or destroyed, and now people are trying to block out the truth and pretend that everything is still harmonious. The lyrics suggest a breakdown of unity and the consequences that come with it, with the impending judgment of humanity.
Overall, the lyrics of "The Death of Balance / Lacrymosa" convey a feeling of sorrow and despair about the loss of unity and balance in the world. The hymn "Lacrimosa" serves as a powerful symbol for the consequences of humanity's actions and the eventual judgment that awaits.
