Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. Their music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band".
Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word 'Symphony' came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said 'Symphony X' and we were like, 'yeah, that's cool' it is that kinda thing, and the 'X' is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
The albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite were partially recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo's home studio. The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded there and produced by Romeo himself.

Symphony X Lyrics

Sadness reigns upon us all
White doves fade to black
With the absence of the heart
We could never smile
We can feel the bitter tears
Visions I can't see, like the wind and your love
Whispers to you, calling out through the night
Words I can't hear, graceful figure in white
And when you watch over me
Please guide me all the way
You're my judge and my jury
As I lay my head to rest
Your absence will surround me
And I'll die another death
Whispers from you, calling out from above
Visions I can't see, like the wind and your love
Whispers to you, calling out through the night
Words I can't hear, graceful figure in white
Whispers from you, calling out from above
Visions I can't see, like the wind and your love
Whispers to you, calling out through the night
Words I can't hear, graceful figure in white
The lyrics to Symphony's song "Whisper" paint a vivid picture of a profound and heartbreaking loss. The opening lines, "When all the angels cry, Sadness reigns upon us all," create a somber and mournful tone. The image of white doves fading to black adds to the sense of despair and loss.
The absence of the heart is a recurring theme in the song, with lyrics like, "With the absence of the heart, We could never smile." This suggests that the person who has been lost was an essential part of the singer's life, and without them, they feel incomplete and unable to find joy.
The whispers from above represent the voice of the lost loved one, calling out to the singer from beyond. The singer can feel their presence and is comforted by their love. However, as much as the singer wants to hear their voice, they can only hear faint whispers and see visions they cannot fully comprehend.
The final lines, "And I'll die another death," express the depth of the singer's grief. Even though they are still alive, they feel as though they have already died because of the pain they are experiencing. The graceful figure in white represents the lost loved one, their memory and presence lingering on even after their passing.
Overall, "Whisper" is a moving and poignant song about loss, grief, and the sense of longing for the presence of a loved one who's no longer there.
