Highway Song
System Of A Down㘀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need not fear the love
You love to love the fear
I never want to be alone
I've forgotten too
The road keeps moving the clouds
The clouds become unreal
I guess I'll always be at home
Do you want me to try?
Directing your night

An exit lights the sky
The sky becomes complete
Traveling hearts divine the throne
I've forgotten too
Friction, lines, bumps
The highway song complete
The signs are all turning right

Do you want me to try?
Directing your night
Want me to try
Directing your life

The purest forms of life
Our days are never coming back
The cannons of our time
Our days are never coming back

The purest forms of life
Our days are never coming back
The cannons of our time
Our days are never coming back

Our days are never coming back

Our days are never coming back
Our days are never coming back

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Highway Song" by System of a Down explore themes of love, fear, and the passage of time. The first few lines suggest an insecurity in love and the fear of being alone, which is why the persona of the song ("I") never wants to be by himself. He seems to have lost something important, which is reflected in the line "I've forgotten too." The road and the clouds are constantly moving around him, making everything feel surreal and he always feels at home no matter where he is.

As the song progresses, the imagery becomes more specific, describing an exit lighting up the sky and the feeling of completeness it brings. Friction, lines, and bumps refer to the experience of traveling on the highway, and the "highway song" itself becomes a symbol for the journey of life. The persona is asking whether the other person wants him to try and direct their night or their life, indicating a desire for control or leadership in the relationship.

The repetition of "Our days are never coming back" at the end of the song emphasizes the fleeting nature of time and the importance of living in the moment. The cannons of our time refer to the significant events and changes that occur throughout history, which can never be repeated or reversed.

I lost my mom after a 29 year war with MS. She never wanted a funeral. She wanted a get together with family and friends playing southern rock. We were able to get the dinner together with family and friends but no music. I have made it a promise to myself that I would honor mom's wishes and get the music playing!! This is a damn good one by Blackfoot. This goes for you mom. I love and miss you!!! RIP!!!

From a 60 year old woman - this is my music, my life being married to a drummer who lived and breathed rock music. I really don't know what I would do without these videos. The music being made today can't hold a candle to the beautiful stuff my generation was privileged to hear. My ex died 3 years ago, but I know he is in the land of music and dreams. Over 40 years my best friend, every song brings you back.

It's a crime that Blackfoot isn't in the rock n roll hall of fame. Rickey medlocke is a legend

My dad died a year ago. He was an outlaw, old school bad SOB. I was not like him, but i loved him for being exactly who he was. I pray he knew how much.
