War?
System Of A Down㘀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dark is the light,
The man you fight,
With all your prayers, incantations,
Running away, a trivial day,
Of judgment and deliverance,
To whom was sold, this bounty soul,
A gentile or a priest ?
Who victored over, the seljuks,
When the holy land was taken

We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens

Was it the riches, of the land,
Powers of bright darkness,
That lead the noble, to the east,
To fight the heathens

We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens

We must call upon our bright darkness,
Beliefs, they're the bullets of the wicked,
One was written on the sword,
For you must enter a room to destroy it,
International security,
Call of the righteous man,
Needs a reason to kill man,
History teaches us so,
The reason he must attain,
Must be approved by his god,
His child, partisan brother of war,

Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,

We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens

We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, we will fight the heathens

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of System of a Down's song War is a commentary on the historical and present-day issues of war and the justifications used to wage it. The opening lines "Dark is the light, The man you fight" sets up the tone for the song where the battle between good and evil is not always clear cut. The use of "prayers" and "incantations" highlights the religious justifications often used to fight wars. The line "Of judgment and deliverance" refers to the idea that wars are fought to rectify or deliver justice to a wronged party.

The lyrics then shift towards a question of why people go to war. Was it the "riches of the land" or "powers of bright darkness" that drove the noble to the East to fight heathens. The song then questions the moral and ethical implications of war. When the reason for killing is based on beliefs, it becomes a bullet in the hands of the wicked. The line "history teaches us so" points to the futility of wars as they never really solve any issues.

The chorus emphasizes the willingness to fight heathens or whoever is deemed to be the enemy, but the final lines "Of war, we don't speak anymore" shows the weariness towards war as a solution to conflicts. The song highlights the different perspectives, justification and the consequences of war.

♻️ The plastic crisis gets a lot of attention as pollution, but the environmental impact of plastic’s life cycle starts long before it ends up in our waterways and ecosystems. Watch our latest animation, The Story of Plastic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO3SA4YyEYU

It might be interesting and enlightening if you look into the amount of fossil fuel to make windmills and solar panels,
Plus how they dispose of the hundreds of tons of windmill blades.

@algoenespanol

"Dinosaur Economy" is such an accurate term, since so much of it relies on fossil fuels, is unnecessarily large and may cause our extinction.

90% of the people can't think outside the box. The 1% know this very well. Thus I agree with who said "if vote changed anything it would be illegal" (by the 1%).

My teacher showed me your first film... I was so inspired.

the typewrited and that’s exactly why they claim they „have no money” for schools :/

This was a very informative video to watch and my teacher told us to watch it and I'm glad that I watched it and it was also watched in a very intuitive way and I watched in very carefully.

@Corvicula1979

Annie, you rock my world. I discovered your series last week, watched all the eps, and was waiting impatiently for this one to get released. Even up here in what some people like to call "Canuckistan" with our socialized heathcare and other such, this is a problem: the government can consider spending billions of dollars on new fighter planes (even more ridiculous with our relatively small military), but our social services are constantly squeezed or facing cutbacks).

@Zhonguoria

6:03  Voting ≠ democracy!  Voting is manipulated so incumbent-members of Congress can never be defeated.  US needs a Constitutional Amendment where federal elected officials have TERM-LIMITS, and bribes are illegal.

@ruihanzeng3645

I do agree with you that incumbent win too much of the time (~94% of the time for house members and ~80% for senators), but neither term limits nor campaign fiance laws are going to do anything (Since donations are bribes; no rational person or corporation is going to give money to  a politician without getting something they want in return).  First of all if you don't eliminate gerrymandering (even though it is illegal, it is almost impossible to prove in court), the same people, or people with the same ideology are going to get elected year after year.  Nothing changes.  Second of all, campaign are expensive to run, on average House rep spends several hundred thousand during campaigns; Senators spend millions.  Without campaign donations, the only people that could afford to run for office are the super rich.  You have good intentions, but the results of the two policies you suggested will probably make government even less accountable to the people.
