Sugar
System Of A Down (Rock Am Ring 2011 live) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The Kombucha mushroom people
Sitting around all day
Who can believe you
Who can believe you
Let your mother pray (sugar)

I'm not there all the time you know
Some people, some people, some people
Call it insane, yeah they call it insane (sugar)
I play Russian roulette everyday, a man's sport
With a bullet called life, yeah, mama, called life(sugar)
You know that every time I try to go
Where I really want to be
It's already where I am
'Cause I'm already there

The Kombucha mushroom people
Sitting around all day
Who can believe you
Who can believe you
Let your mother pray (sugar)

I got a gun the other day from Sako
It's cute, small, fits right in my pocket
Yeah, right in my pocket, (sugar)
My girl, you know, she lashes out at me sometimes
And I just fucking kick her, and then, ooh baby, she's ok (sugar)
People are always chasing me down
Trying to push my face to the ground
Where all they really want to do
Is suck out my mother fucking brains, my brains (sugar)

The Kombucha mushroom people
Sitting around all day
Who can believe you
Who can believe you
Let your mother pray

I sit, in my desolate room, no lights, no music
Just havoc
I've killed everyone
I'm away forever, but I'm feeling better
How do I feel
What do I say
Fuck you, it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
Fuck you, it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
How do I feel
What do I say
In the end it all goes away
In the end it all goes away
In the end it all goes away

In the end it all goes away
In the end it all goes away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of SOAD's "Sugar" are full of cutting social commentary delivered in a manic, frenetic style. The Kombucha mushroom people referenced in the first and last verse are likely a reference to the counterculture movement and people who participate in it, but SOAD suggests they are often passive and unproductive. This is a theme throughout the song, as the singer rails against people who are content to sit around all day and not do anything. The chorus of "sugar" references the comforting aspects of religion, but there is a cynical undertone that suggests it is just a hollow gesture.

The second verse takes a dark turn as the singer admits to playing Russian roulette with his own life every day. He also describes getting a gun and using violence to control his girlfriend when she gets out of line. This is clearly a disturbing display of toxic masculinity, and the final verse takes it even further as the singer claims to have killed everyone and feels better for it. It is unclear whether this is a metaphorical statement about the end of a relationship or a literal admission of violence, but either way, it adds to the sense of chaos and violence that permeates the song.

Overall, "Sugar" is a searing indictment of modern society and the way people can become passive, violent, and nihilistic. The lyrics are full of contradictions and dark humor that make it difficult to parse out a clear message, but this is the point. SOAD is painting a bleak, dystopian picture of the world, and it is up to the listener to decide what to make of it.

You know a song is going to be a banger when youtube warns you

@ConstantlyDamaged

Yeah, not sure when they added that. This song is nearly old enough to get a license and drink—and they suddenly decide it's sensitive and my logged-in ass needs to approve it?

@ChrisPoindexter98

@@ConstantlyDamaged IKR, it might be too based and "redpilled" (the old meaning), anti-establishment vibes, so they're like, "can't let people get access to this third-eye-opening video too easy."

Esp. weird since we're logged-in, yeah...maybe the 100 million plus views on an official VEVO music video scared YouTube, and from what I can tell the brief, real life clips of people hanging is I guess what tipped them over, not to mention descriptions of domestic abuse, actual footage of mass tragedies, and the almost naked gal near the beginning.

Hell, maybe the emotional urgency and rawness of this whole thing might seem "too scary," which...I mean...for a small child, maybe, 🥴 or if one is in a vulnerable state of being. 😳🤷🏻‍♂️

@not_yo_cheez

This is my first time watching it since they’ve added it. It’s weird.

@ConstantlyDamaged

@@ChrisPoindexter98 I have no problem with there being a warning, I just would like, as an adult in their 40s, to be able to auto-skip such (even if I have to see it once for each video, being able to ignore for future viewings would be nice).

@ChrisPoindexter98

@@ConstantlyDamaged 💯 23 here, and absolutely, since we're users, it's like, come on, our "info" is saved there so we may as well have that convenience. 👌🏻

You are in a room with NO LIGHTS and NO MUSIC. But when you hear the crowd cheer, you know it’s going to be this song.

@Blastoff24001aj

@Charles Michiru Gallo but in the end, the feeling goes away!

Yes how did you know🍷

@@stillmeme493 That’s literally how you follow the song!
