Marmalade
System of a Down Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Blessed are those who are not kin
In sin we breathe, in sex, we tie
Duct tape her legs to the red sky
Foolsome flesh allowances
The pansies raided the pantry of
Gabardine dreams, promiscuous
Custard dreams
Abusing, musing
Marmalade flesh
Naked spread am I
Am I
Actors of the tragic phantom
Extend your legs for great Saturn
Brown table tops scream for cover
At the sight of your new lover
If today I die
And can't deny
The poison chosen for tonight
Tonight
Woo
Borrowed dreams, hollowed reveries
Metal pillows, pewter yellows
Furry roadkill, house on the hill
Pouring gravy on her thighs still
If today I die
And can't deny
The poison chosen for tonight
Tonight
The lyrics of System of a Down's Marmalade are intricate and esoteric, typical of the band's work. At first glance, it might seem that the lyrics are about sexual deviation and violence against women, but the song's meaning goes deeper than that. The opening lines of the song, "Stretching, filing, against her skin, Blessed are those who are not kin, In sin we breathe, in sex we tie, Duct tape her legs to the red sky," might seem gruesome, but are a metaphor for the way society constrains and restricts us. The "her" of the opening lines represents society, while "those who are not kin" are a reference to those who are unburdened by societal conventions.
The lines "Foolsome flesh allowances, The pansies raided the pantry of, Gabardine dreams, promiscuous, Delight, deny not the flavor," are open to various interpretations. Some have suggested that they refer to societal decadence and the way we indulge our base desires at the expense of others. Others believe that the lines could be about the way that we use sexual desires to escape from the constraints of society.
The chorus of the song, "Custard dreams, Abusing, musing, Marmalade flesh, Naked spread am I, Am I," is an introspective moment in the song. It seems to be a reflection on the way we use our bodies and desires to escape from the reality of the world around us. The final lines of the song, "If today I die, and can't deny, The poison chosen for tonight, Tonight" are a poetic reflection on our mortality and the choices we make in our lives.

Actors of the tragic phantom
The singers ask actors of the tragic phantom- those who are involved in making art more tragic or darker- to be prepared and extend their legs for great Saturn or deaths' cold embrace.
Extend your legs for great Saturn
The lyric refers to death as Saturn, the god of time and father of all gods, asking actors to prepare for the tragic scenes they will play in.

Metal pillows, pewter yellows
Describing the dreary environment and surroundings that the person experiencing deep pain feels. The metal pillows' coldness indicates lack of comfort, and pewter yellows show a sad, faded world.
Furry roadkill, house on the hill
Life feels pointless; even a house on a hill, which is the epitome of success and happiness, no longer means anything to a person who's experiencing pain. They see furry roadkill, or death, at every turn.
Pouring gravy on her thighs still
The song suggests gruesome ways to commit self-harm like pouring hot gravy on your wounds to make the pain more pleasurable to the masochistic person.

@brentulstad3275
Alot of Dead Kennedys style and attitude in this one too. Not quite subtle really but that under-lying sarcastic tone and satirical lampooning of either the general status-quo or a specific target who's owed a seriously high debt of brutal mockery.
