System of a Down Lyrics

Hey, Mister Jack
Is that the mouthwash in your eyes?
Hey, Mister Jack
Is that the cause of your surprise?

Hey, where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the car?
Hey, where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the car?
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the

Hey, Mister Jack (hey)
Is that the trick of your disguise?
Hey, Mister Jack
Is that the cause of your demise?

Hey, where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the car?
Hey, where you at?
On the side of the freeway in the car?
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the car?
In the car
On the side of the freeway in the

Wake up
Seven AM, morning
Came to take us away
Little men, big guns
Pointed at our heads

Seven AM, morning
Came to take us away
Little men, big guns
Pointed at our heads
At our, at our heads

Your prospect of living gone
You ran the light at dawn
Protectors on your back
Lights are on their track

You must now face authority
You're nothing like me
You must now face authority
You're nothing like me

Put your hands up, get out of the car
Put your hands up, get out of the car
Put your hands up, get out of the car

Fuck you, pig
Fuck you, pig
Fuck you, pig

Fuck you, pig
Put your hands up, get out of the car

Overall Meaning

System of a Down's song "Mr. Jack" is a heavy, politically charged track about police brutality and the abuse of authority. The lyrics open with the singer addressing "Mister Jack" and asking about the "mouthwash in your eyes" and "the cause of your surprise." This could possibly be interpreted as questioning the mental state of those in power, who are meant to protect and serve but instead cause harm and surprise through their actions. The song then shifts to a more literal representation of police brutality with the line "little men, big guns pointed at our heads." This paints a picture of overwhelming force being used against innocent people, perhaps meant to show the disproportionate amount of power given to police officers.

The song continues with accusations of breaking the law and facing the consequences, but also seems to suggest that those in power are not held to the same standards. This is made clear with the repeated line "you must now face authority, you're nothing like me," representing the disconnect between those in power and those they are meant to serve. The song then ends with the defiant line "fuck you, pig," followed by the order to "get out of the car." This is a powerful statement against police brutality and the abuse of power, and suggests a call to action to resist against those who would abuse their authority.

I always go back to SOAD when all the other music is so boring. This band is legendary

@Dhakadice

That's literally what I did. :D

Long story short, this guy from Greece had heard my band on Spotify and asked me to put some vocals on two of his songs.
Being super-flattered, I went REALLY ambitious (showing off everything from super-powerful but clean vocals to minute-long growls to vocal harmonies to verses that sounded like hooks).

Then I realized it started to sound a lot like SOAD and I had to listen to this song to make sure I hadn't just ripped the whole thing off.
Conclusion: Reach for perfection and you might end up sounding like SOAD (if you're lucky).
