He has an “American” ear, influenced by the American radio programmes broadcast from the US base in Asmara and, with an eye toward improving his playing, was one of the first Ethiopian musicians to go to the USA. Today he still works there, mainly in the clubs of the Ethiopian and Eritrean diasporas.

It’s 10pm. You spot a little bar glowing in the distance. You walk up and stand outside while you finish your cigarette. You push the door open - it’s heavy. Inside it’s quiet. All dark wood and low ceilings. You half-glimpse people at a table in the corner, lit by a candle. This is playing. You’re staying for a drink.

What I find strange and love is the melody of Ethiopian jazz. A Japanese friend told me i was listening to Japanese music. later on after listening to some old Japanese folk songs the melodies are so similar.
