The group was founded in Paris during the 1980s. Originally, they played music heavily influenced by the punk movement and depended on electric instruments. Their third album featured Anne-Gaëlle, a classically trained cellist, and marked a turning point in the group’s music toward a more acoustic sound. The group’s later efforts misleadingly took shape of casual folk songs while actually using stunning musical arrangements, experimental soundscapes and poetic lyrics rife with very dark humor.
Listeners find the influence of classic French musicians like Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens and Les Négresses Vertes.
Les poupées
Têtes Raides Lyrics

Que ratée je t'ai
(Meuh !)
Je t'aime
Voulu toi si fort beaucoup trop
Que brisée je t'ai
(Meuh !)
Tellement t'y voir qu'j'aurais voulu
The lyrics of Têtes Raides's song "Les poupées" ("The Dolls") deal with the possessiveness and jealousy that can arise in a romantic relationship. The singer of the song wants to possess everything about their partner, from their smile to their sheets, from their cat's food to their moments of reflection, from their clothing to their makeup. However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that the desire for possession is mutual, as the partner also wants to possess the singer. This leads to a struggle for control that ultimately ends in the destruction of their love.
The image of dolls and bodies made of fabric and cardboard, as well as the references to chills and ice, serve to underscore the idea that the love between the two partners is ultimately fragile and artificial, something that can easily be torn apart or frozen over. The repetition of the phrase "Je t'aime" ("I love you") throughout the song takes on a sinister undertone, suggesting that love can become a weapon to be wielded against someone else rather than a genuine emotion.
