T'Pau formed in 1986. The members originated from the towns of Shrewsbury and Wellington in central England and took their name from a Vulcan high priestess in the classic Star Trek episode Amok Time. Their debut single and first hit was the 1987 release Heart and Soul. Initially a flop in the UK, it first became a hit in the U.S. Billboard charts, reaching #4, a feat it repeated in the UK Singles Chart some months later. The same year, the band had their biggest hit with the ballad, China in Your Hand, which spent five weeks at Number One in the UK chart, and also claimed the top slot in several European countries, although oddly the song made little impact on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
They had a number of smaller hits which made it to at least the UK Top 40, including the singles Valentine, Sex Talk (a new recording of early flop single Intimate Strangers), I Will Be With You, and Secret Garden. Their 1987 album Bridge Of Spies (the album was called T'Pau in the U.S.) was a best seller and won several British record industry awards.
Nevertheless, the band failed to maintain their success and split in 1991. But Decker reformed the band with a new line-up in 1998, and T'Pau have in recent years attempted a comeback.
In May 2005, Carol Decker reached the final round of the ITV show Hit Me Baby One More Time, singing the T'Pau hit China in Your Hand.

I don't care who it is
I just wanna have a laugh
You know how it is, yeah yeah
All of the day in the same old room
Well, I'm going out of my mind
I can't throw this out of the window
It's mine all mine
Hell, you know I mean it
I've been on my own too long
In desperation I learned many things
But mostly it's each to their own
Sex talk
Intimate strangers
Well it's only sex talking on the phone
Love without a face
I just need a pat on the back
Tell me that I'm still alive
Like Spider Man
I'm climbing the walls
I want my prize, yeah yeah
I don't remember
When it crept up behind me
I don't know when I got so wet
All I know is I was looking for something
But I forget
You see that I can't go on living like this
I've been on my own too long
You know I looked around
Never found love
Far away it called one day
Sex talk
Intimate strangers
Well it's only sex talking on the phone
Love, love, love, without a face
I don't remember when it crept up behind me
I don't know when I got so wet
All I know is I was looking for something
What was it? What was it? I forget
Ah well, it's easy for you
To be shocked at what I do
You've probably got someone at home
I never had anyone to love me
Anyone to hold me
I take what I can on the telephone
Sex talk, intimate strangers
Well it's only sex talking on the phone
My kind of love without a face
And we talk oh! yeah!
Intimate strangers
Well it's only sex talking on the phone
Love, love, love, without a face
Gimme your love
Gimme your love
Talk to me, woh yeah!
Sex talk
We talk
We have a good time on the telephone lines
We talk oh yeah!
T'Pau's song "Sex Talk" delves into the loneliness and desperation that can come with being single and the desire for intimate connection, even if it's just through talking on the phone. The lyrics reflect the singer's need for someone to talk to and seek comfort from, stating that they don't care who it is as long as they can have a laugh and feel alive. The repetition of "intimate strangers" emphasizes the anonymous nature of the conversations, and the emphasis on "sex talk" highlights the physical nature of the connection, even if it's just through conversation.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of longing and searching for love, as the singer states they have been "on their own too long" and "never found love". The line "love without a face" reinforces the idea that the singer is seeking connection without necessarily requiring a physical presence or a face to attach to the emotion of love. The repetition of "talk to me" and "we talk" emphasizes the need for conversation and connection, even if it may not be a traditional form of intimacy.
