If GW did around 4-6 of the following, Tau may be in a healthier spot:
-Heavy Armor Battlesuit: mobile and tanky battlesuits that can sit on objectives (hulkbuster)
-Markerlight Rework A: Markerlights may target engaged enemies, and marked enemies may be targeted even in combat by the rest your army.
-New Battlesuit Support System: pay points for fall back and shoot on jet pack battlesuits.
-Markerlight Rework B: Markerlights get more shots or shrink the table to make them more efficient.
-Auxiliary Buff: Make Kroot cheaper or better to be objective scorers
-Battlesuit Close Range Weapon: A weapon option with short range where its special text is that it can be used in both the shooting phase (using BS) and close range (using WS).
-Psionic Auxiliaries: Either new auxiliary psyker models or a point upgrade for HQs that give them a deny (brain worms)
-Master of War Rework: Range of Mont'ka and Kau'yon becomes global (sept must matches using commander). Kau'yon fluff-wise should enable fall back and shoot and/or improved Overwatch as its literally meant to be the lure and ambush tactic.
-End Drone-Point Inflation: Nerf drones by A] changing Savior Protocol activation to hit-savior instead of hit-wound-save-savior. B] make it so drones never separate and thus only drones taken with a unit can savior protocol for their own unit, or C] get rid of savior protocol for everything but shield drones and shield drones lose their FNP. Then drop the point costs for every unit that was inflated because of the hypothetical durability offered by savior protocols.

The FAQ has errata'd Mont'ka to look like this:

"Mont’ka: In a turn in which a <Sept> Commander unit from your
army declared Mont’ka, at the start of your Movement phase you
can select any friendly <Sept> units within 6" of that unit. Until
the end of that turn, the selected units can shoot as if they did not
move this turn."

This would mean you can't fall back and shoot anymore. The only good lists are the big crisis suit ones - but they don't work right without fallback and shoot.

@John Cuffe you already got good answers but "basically" warhammer runs on a limit theory. That everything has it's limits and once it reaches that limit it can only go down. That is decay. Tau are the only race with a yet unknown limit since they are so new relatively speaking

We can see this in the real world too. For example the human eye can barely discern pixels on a 4k tv screen. An 8k tv screen is already overkill. We have reached that limit and any improvements are a waste. This might eventually mean we stop researching better screens and slowly forget that technology. The tv is the admech in a sense. Now the T'au are like a computer. We still have yet to find any limits. We can still push further. Graphics cards aren't slowing down for example. The scary part is the unknown. We don't know what the limits are. It could well be that Nvidia says "we can't make anything better" in a year, a month or maybe even a week. Now that obviously isn't realistic but you get the concept. We'd like to think we can crack quantum physics but what if the necessary technology stops short? Of course we still might. Those are T'au. They bring hope as they bring worry

There is a language in warhammer called Enuncia. I call it a language but speaking it could literally break your jaw. You might even die. "Common" mishaps include shattered teeth, bloody throaths, loss of voices and so on. However the benefits far outweigh the downsides. Myths say it was a language invented by... the old ones? Those frog gods I think to help them build the world. There was a guy who figured out that using Enuncia, he could become a virtual god. He didn't make it to that point. He still lives though. Managed to heal hundreds of wounds on himself and use a few words to escape an entire company of space marines I believe. His collection of words was destroyed though. The imperium fears many things but that language might well be it's downfall. So they act to snuff it out. They could use it, anybody can. You don't have to be a psyker and it's actually even stronger than psyker powers. But therein lies the problem. Anybody can use it. So just like irl, they know of the technology but they aren't in a spot where they can use it safely. Dying in 20 years is preferable to 1 year is the logic. Those are humans. They bring no worry and yet they bring no hope

@John Cuffe Lore wise the Imperium doesn't understand half the technology it uses, and this is just as true of the Ad Mech, who literally worship machine repair and boot up as religious rituals. The Tau, meanwhile, are a young civilization, who have not gone through any process of civilizational decay or loss of technology and wisdom. Tau weaponry is considered superior to Imperial tech, and many Imperial worlds have been slowly converted to the Tau cause by selling them cheap Pulse Rifles. Pulse Rifles are superior to Bolters and far outclass the weak Lasguns that would be available to most Imperial soldiers. The Imperium, and especially the Ad Mech, can create weapons that match what the Tau have, but they tend to be expensive, clunky, and dangerous to operate, issues Tau weaponry does not have. The only things the Tau lack, are a large population, and abundant resources.

I like a bunch of these, especially the Markerlight A and the Drone nerf. I've always found it annoying moving around 2 or 1 drones independently and reminding my opponent that they are an individual unit

Just so you know, I'm fairly sure you can't take a single drone on your troops choices, it's either 0 or 2. So unless I'm missing something, those 4 drones were paired up, probably so that there are 2x five man breachers per devilfish, and one of those units has two drones as an upgrade. The drones are separate once deployed but still stay as a unit of 2.

You are correct, the actual list also had guardian drones in the squads with the marker drones but most text-outputs list the guardian drone seperate from the other items in the list so its an easy to miss

Another strong unit not mentioned are XV9 hazzard suits with fusion cascades, they are the only other battle suit that can use the fse dropzone clear stratagem for +1 to hit, they are more efficient than veteran crisis suits against 6+ model elite infantry units, the -2 to charge them also makes them fairly immune to deepstrike charges and great frontline models.

Another competitive way to use breechers is 2x 10 man units, one with the guardian drone + other drone, strategic reserve them both for 1 cp and have them come down one at a time and use the stratagem to get the close range profile at 15"

spamming min pathfinder units to get grav inhib drones is also worth considering in a competitive list (especially if you are committing to more lots of breechers and multiple guardian drones).

Both the ghostkeels special prototype relics are strong competitive picks as well

Always love to see some analysis of Tau! Although I will just say, at around 8:10 you say Enclave's have a strat to allow Breachers to fire twice which is actually a Vior'la strat, Hot Blooded. Which is cool, that strat is incredible and lifts the whole Sept a wholt lot and is why we see more Vior'la detachments recently.

Edit: I missed he did say the correct sept later towards the end of the video, but I'll just leave it here for clarification.

I almost beat a Deathwatch list with Faraight Enclaves, even brought The Eight in the list. I was in the lead most of the game but lost it last turn with a round of bad shooting.
I will continue to play Tau no matter where they stand. I'm here to have fun, not win. And if that means charging a Dreadnought with a gun drone, then by the Greatest of Goods I'm charging that Dreadnought with a gun drone.

I have been playing Tau in causal games and doing really well. Against some good lists too. Obviously these GT lists are great. I think a hidden gem is stealth suits. Yes they are over priced, but so is everything else. You can bring units with shield gens for around 90 points. They are a pain to kill and great for scoring points, actions and screening. They can also be used to tie things up quite well.

I have been saying for a while now that tai need to be played in a much more mobile way. That why farsighted and vi’orla septs are the best ones to use. The old castle is just not what it used to be and it simply doesn’t work in 9th. I agree with what you have talked about and do very similar but solely using vi’orla sept. Still can’t wait to see if the new codex when it eventually drops gives the tau new duff with statagems and sept attics and maybe a bit of new equipment developed from the experimental stuff to make the tau even more mobile and faster

Playing them since 4th. Since start of 9th, I played them 6 times, winning 4 times, one of these wins being against new codex Drukhari. Try 2 Crisis Teams, one employing 3 flamers per model, the other one being Veteran Cadre with 3 Missile Pods each (against Drukhari 2 MPs + Velo Tracker) and 1+ Suit w/ Airburst/Shield/MP + Reactive Countermeasures Relic. Let's just say this combo hurts. Especially if combined with 2 commanders (Farsight Enclaves) and a Riptide.

ive been playing p.competitively with a dalyth stealth suit/ghostkeel spam combo and winning more than not. the extra save stops them being shifted easily and the strat allows u to fling faster units across the field for engage

The reason why Ben took Viorla detachment is because Auxiliaries units such as vespid breaks the detachment bonus of aggressive footing. Siegler tournament however, ruled that the vespids do not break aggressive footing, so he didn't have to take a second detachment to legitimize his vespids.

i never much liked suits other than broadsides, always liked the tanks, and firing lines, even if it meant advancing up and firing at point blank, but i think thats because i remember them more fondly when they were newly released, which was at the height of my IRL 40k playing. but in 8th, i hated suits and drones. so into 9th no changes really effected my memey lists anyway :D lines of fire warriors, breachers in a couple transports, sunshark bombers. bunch of speeders. and a cool paint scheme.

You missed the Reactive Stabilizer Jets prototype weapon relic. It allows suits to reroll 1s to hit and would, which helps a ton.

I just played 1000 pts with tau against primaris Space Wolves: infantry with shield drones (with cadre fireblades) to hold the line for objectives and battle suits (with missile launchers and shield drones) to hit hard on objectives that are out if reach, seems to be viable (I only had 1 battlesuit unit but it worked). I lost but if I swapped out the 2 hammerheads I was using for battlesuits, I could have done much better.

The points don't really do that much in reducing effectiveness, you get quite a lot for 1000 pts (I got two hammerheads in with army with 4 squads, 1 crisis battlesuit team, 2 fireblades and 1 ethereal). Overall it did well for what it is.

@Ronny RDR that’s impressive I won’t deny that. 3 ctans is very expensive though and I would say Tau deals with them the same way most armies would since you just pick off their other units and tarpit the ctans. I would be curious to see his list though since I’m curious what direction he went.

I play necrons and Tau so I’m pretty familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of each army and how to play one against the other.

I was more just trying to make a point that ctans against Tau aren’t really an interesting match up and many Tau lists can’t handle them. I like broadsides and ghostkeels which are both fairly weak to ctans, at least in my experience so I don’t really enjoy playing against them.

@Hayden Fry He didnt tailor the list anti necron or C'tan shards. it were just units he normally has in his list. He also watches these videos and commented to me too tell you: Tell him i won my last game as tau vs 3 C'tan shards without using any of those afore mentioned units. I heard i was there but i didnt see the match in person. So it possible for tau to play around your ctan shard problem. added: If you want i can ask him talk to you personally. Maybe give you some pointers and tips. He's been on facebook and reddit a lot for help. so maybe it will help you out aswell.

@Ronny RDR I think it is 100% possible to play drukhari without cult of strife and asking to not use crisis suits is more akin to asking drukhari not to use incubi or another elite unit not something the entire faction is based around. I also only meant farsight not all commanders in general, I realize that is unrealistic considering they make up a majority of the Tau’s hqs. I was more just meaning that your friend can keep up with a necron ctan because he is using the strongest Tau army out there and he made a list that can specifically deal with it. Lots of people don’t play like that and so saying that most Tau players could deal like your friend can is unrealistic. I personally don’t play farsight enclaves all that often and don’t always use crisis suits so I probably couldn’t deal with a ctan. Most people that play casually or focus on what they like over what’s best (not saying that’s why your friend picked those units they just happen to be good) probably couldn’t handle a ctan army so it’s usually good sportsmanship not to bring one unless they’ve prepared for it or want to face it.

Never underestimate pilling as many Flamers onto Crisis Suits as possible and standing the mid-board. It’s cheap, durable with the Iridium, Shield Gens, Reactive Counter Measures relic. Plus oddly satisfying to just burn Marines to death through their 3+... for the greater good...

One thing I swear by is Stealth Suits + Shield Generators + Furious Assault strategem

The trick to it is that it's a sudden assault followed by the stealth suits basically just holding the line. Stealth suits aren't going to win melee after that charge, exactly, but they're actually very good at not losing at melee if you set it up against foes not specifically geared towards it... So I've held up some huge, troublesome squads for entire games with this, and can do this from turn 1 since they can deploy pretty far up. Then, supplement that with Repulsor Impact Field and Failsafe Detonator strategems

However, this comes with a big disclaimer that this might be entirely ineffective against people that play less casually than the people I play with, who are generally pretty laid-back

Ive been using Breachers since late 8th ed. Strike Squads are fairly inaccurate, lack ap, and are very squishy. So while hitting at 30" is great, I found that theyd die if allowed to engage in fire fights so Id keep them obscured to hold objectives. In the event someone got to them, the better ap on the breachers made them the superior choice.

I like to run the 9 veteran bodyguards as an actual melee unit with the shield gen, ATS and flamer except for one with the AFP relic.
they can reroll all hit and wound rolls while near a commander for 1 cp and for another cp do mortal wounds on the charge (on 3+ for each model within ER).
It costs some 450 points but opponent can't not shoot at it cause I can score with it big time and even threaten him. Whatever else I bring -like riptides, Broadsides etc. needs shooting too, forcing my opponents to make a decision he/she doesn't want to.
Feel free to speak your mind about the Idea but I know its whacky and I know I still wont let off it.

These army lists make me sad. They're pretty much what I expected them to be after the blatant flanderization of the faction from a mobile combined-arms force to "lol giant robots". Poor mobility apart from the breachers in devilfish, vespids and the occasional remora, mostly focused on static gunlines built around battlesuits, using a giant blob of crisis suits backed by a riptide, Farsight and an XV8 commander. Part of it's because this isn't the T'au I remember, and part of it's because this is literally all the faction has left after a constant stream of nerfs that can be compared to Masahiro Sakurai's Greninja nerfing fetish in Super Smash Bros 4.

Honestly, I get the feeling GW really just wants to squat the faction and are trying to kill interest in them by killing their playability on the tabletop.

It's probably worth noting that in Siegler's list the tournament organisers ruled Vespids don't break the Aggressive Footing rule, +1 markerlight counter on units within 12", whereas RAW they do.

@Rancid Polecat Tournaments often issue their own errata to fix things they think GW haven't gotten around to fixing yet. A lot of them ruled Mont'ka allowed fall back and shoot before GW explicitly stated it in their FAQ and others allow Reactive Countermeasures to apply to all crisis suits with AFPs.

Another edge case of unintended rule interactions is Stealth Suit Shas'vre with the markerlight and target lock option. In 8th the target lock allowed battlesuits to move and shot heavy weapons with no penalty. In 9th only infantry have a moving and shooting heavy weapons penalty so target lock changed to allowing battle suits to advance and shoot heavy and rapid fire weapons at -1 to hit. But Stealth Suits are <infantry> and <battlesuit> so if the unit moves they shoot the markerlight at -1 to hit negating the original intended benefit of the markerlight and target lock option. If you brought this up to a TO they'd probably rule it should work like it was originally intended to.

TL;DR: Tournamet Organisers - "I recognise GW have made a ruling. But given that it's a stupid-ass ruling I've elected to ignore it"

@daveshans I don’t think I’m understanding you. Sorry. The errata states to benefit from aggressive footing units must be in an FSE detachment. That is- in their words - a detachment that only includes FSE units- Alien Auxiliaries do not have the <SEPT> keyword so their inclusion would break this. Therefore I believe the TOs got it wrong unless I missed some other errata or FAQ. Even though they didn’t mention Alien units by name this should be implied.

@Rancid Polecat Because a lot of the time it seems GW writes rules without really thinking them through. The original wording in the book technically allowed FSE units in non FSE detachments to benefit from aggressive footing rule and the FAQ in an effort to stop that they forgot about auxiliaries.

When checking this just now I noticed the page numbers are wrong in the Greater Good FAQ, an easy fix that's gone uncorrected for six months.

One of things to bare in mind with Seiglers list. Normally you lose the aggressive footing rule for farsight enclaves if you take auxiliaries (ie vespid). He apparently got permission to omit this from the organisers. Just worth baring in mind if people are thinking of using auxiliaries in a farsight detachment.

@Liveac369 The problem is that dumping all their power into the shooting phase ends poorly because it makes people salty.
Sure, removing 30 wounds in the shooting phase is functionally identical to removing 5 in the psychic phase, 10 in the shooting phase, and 15 in the assault phase but people are dumb and GW isn't competent enough to ignore their bitching, so here we are.

Pacing wise they could also do things like move Marker Lights and Seeker Missiles to the Psychic phase so that things are more structured and easier for the opponent to follow but again, this is GW we're talking about.

I wonder if an ability to fire assault weapons in close combat would make Tau better at securing objectives? If I recall the pulse carbines weren't very good at the moment, but if they could use them in close combat that might be a way to make them better. Either that or more pistols to fire in cqb

I recently watched Art of Wars 40k tier list, and while ranking Tau, Richard Siegler mentioned that he actually wants to drop the Riptide in favor of more missile coldstars and remora drones.

It’s interesting to see players move away from a damage focused playstyle to a more mobility based one.

Anybody else think when the ninth codex drops and we probably get a few new models we will get Melee battle suits. Necrons, space Marines, orcs, and I think drukari All done new models with their code axis so it makes sense that we would get some too.

I am very happy with Tau not being competitive. I dont like the idea of playing as them or vs them. I dont like how they dont have any magic or melee. But go to specialize in the most unfun playstyle, sitting on the back of the table and shooting at you.

Just a note that Siegler's list is technically illegal. The drones on the Firewarriors have to be in pairs, and the Vespid in the list mean he can't use any of the PA:TGG FSE stratagems (Notably including Veteran Cadre), as you need a Farsight Enclaves detachment for these, and the Vespid aren't <sept> units.

The extra rule given by the Greater Good book is not a tenet, and the FAQ saying what classes as a Farsight Enclaves detachment for the extra rule means vespids and kroot break it. This particular tournament (and its the only one I've heard do it) ruled that vespids don't break the rule, as they thought RAI it shouldn't, but RAW they do. GW have had plenty of chances to FAQ it but they haven't so if it does change we'll probably be waiting for the next codex.

Update: The FTGG FAQ does indicate that kroot and vespid take away the ability to use AF. This is either really dumb thinking on the part of GW or an unintended oversight in their rules. Either way, that sucks.
