Good to see VW isnt putting touch sensitive (or not at times) buttons on all their steering wheels. To me that and the same for the climate controls for the climate control are huge drawbacks of the MK8 GTI. Having said that, I dont think the world really needs another small crossover.

I just traded in a 2019 AWD Mazda CX5 Grand Touring with a Taos AWD SE. Some interesting comparisons. Interior. The Mazda wins hands down. In the Mazda you have softer touch materials, stitching on the dash and center console. It's definitely more upscale than the Taos. However, the Taos is not bad. Exterior Mazda is beautiful with its long sloping hood and beautiful front end. However, the Taos, while boxy has an Audi look to it and very fetching in Gray metallic. Driving-If you are short like my wife, you cannot see over the
Mazda's long sloping hood. That made it so she could not park the car anywhere even with the seat at the highest setting. In the Taos, you have a very short squared off hood. She loves it. Now to driving. Our Mazda was not the turbo. You would think at almost 30 extra horsepower (187), the Mazda would be quicker around town. But living at 7000 feet (Santa Fe), guess which vehicle feels quicker. Not the Mazda. Turbo cars simply perform better at higher altitudes. The key to reduced lag starting off. Don't put your foot down hard from a rest. Start off giving it light throttle and then put the hammer down. The VW feels lighter on its feet than the CX5 as well. It handles very well. It feels like an Audi Q5 with a lot more agility. Even though its 4 inches shorter, the rear leg room is "Ginormous". A 6ft plus person can sit in comfort. So, weighing the plusses and minuses I think the Taos SE AWD is the "Sweet Spot" in the range and to me is a better car to drive than the Mazda CX5. We paid $31,400 for it. Not quite an even trade but close.

Kona is great and has been reviewed as such. It does have a smaller size with less cargo capacity. With the smaller size I am pretty sure it would take pot holes and general bumps not as nicely (to put it mildly) than the Taos.

The Kona should be faster though. A good question to ask this comparo!
I still have to say "ouch" when the delivery charge to Canada on the Taos is $1900 and in the US only what about $1000. Guessing the Kona delivery costs are similar.

Though it's not surprising to see the Taos as just another subcompact SUV, a more nuanced perspective suggests it's actually the replacement of the basic Golf for the North American market. (The basic Golf has been withdrawn from the US and in all likelihood won't be back.) As that replacement the Taos provides many of the same features as the Golf. It's a small vehicle (though larger than several other sub-compacts) that with an abundance of interior room. More than any other in its class. The 1.5L turbo is no powerhouse but it's more than ample for urban and suburban traffic and performs well both on long freeway slogs and secondary roads. It doesn't have the same off-road appeal as the Jeep Compass or the CrossTrek but it doesn't pretend to. No silly plastic cladding, the Taos, like the Golf, is meant to face no environment more challenging than an occasional gravel road. With the basic Golf gone the Taos, built and designed for North America, is a good replacement.

It's worth noting, by the way, that those who hope VW will add an "R" version with the iconic 2.0L EA888 engine should be careful what they wish for. The GTI isn't a sacred cow for VW and a performance version of the Taos might end up replacing the GTI (and the Golf R) just as the current version bumps off the basic Golf.

Having recently started watching a LOT of car reviews in prep for buying my first one in over a decade, I can't help but notice that the majority of people who do YouTube car reviews appear to be the absolute worst choice of people to be doing the job. Case in point, MotoMan opens this video by proceeding to give us his opinions on a vehicle aimed at a portion of the market he openly admits he doesn't understand without any attempt to justify why his opinions are in any way relevant.

See also reviewers who advise that you should get a GTI or Integra with a manual after straight up admitting that the automatic will do a better job and give a better experience than anyone but a professional driver could manage. Also ones who begin reviews by immediately turning off a bunch of features that annoy them personally (engine auto-stop, HUDs, lane keeping) despite the fact that their job is to review the vehicle as delivered - show us the featues and let US decide whether they are worthwhile, that's your job here.

We own a fully loaded model. pretty good on gas for a North American vehicle. It has a bit of a flat spot on the throttle for sure....we drive it around town in sport mode. its phenomenal in the snow and drives nice. Id like VW to come out with a fix for the flat spot. Its my wifes car and she loves it. I drive a Toyota Tundra and a Jag XJ.

I agree that it's not 35K good. I just picked up a FWD SE trim for 28K and that's really the highest I wanted to pay for one as my daily driver. It is spacious and peppy, but there is some turbo lag for those who really like to stomp on the gas from a stop. Nice infotainment setup with SiriusXM and wireless CarPlay works flawlessly yet the digital cockpit in the lower trims like mine is really just a digital speedometer. Simply put, don't go over $30K if you buy the AWD model. The FWD is giving me 40 mpg on 1 hour highway commutes with a nice comfortable quiet ride- and without a CVT :). It does have a timing belt so you're looking at a $1000 replacement at 90-100K miles if you keep it that long. In short, it is a transportation box made to appeal to the masses.

The Taos replaced the standard Golf in North America. The MK8 GTI is better in every measurement. 70HP more than this Taos (158HP vs 241HP) and cargo and passenger room about the same as the Taos. Not to mention the GTI is a far better drive than the Taos. Also consider the Taos is made in Puebla, Mexico where as the GTI/Golf R is assembled in Wolfsburg, Germany.

I think it's because a new Highlander, Explorer, Jeep Grand, etc is going to set you back 60 grand. That's why they're wanting cars like this--top of line Taos is about 34K.

Many reviewers are saying the fwd Taos with 8 speed drives a lot better than with awd dct. I just came back from test driving the fwd Taos and I can definitely say it is fun to drive without any lag when accelerating from a stop!

Yes but you make a huge handling sacrifice going with the FWD Taos as the rear suspension is an inferior torsion beam design vs the far better rear Multilink suspension design found in the Taos 4Motion (AWD) and DSG transmission. The real problem I see with the Taos is the underpowered 1.5L turbo with only 158HP. 180-190HP should be the standard for this vehicle here in 2023.

And now the really bad news. August 10, 2021 VW issues a stop sale order to US dealers for all 4motion AWD equipped Taos units due to reports the engine is unexpectedly cutting off when the vehicle comes to a halt.

Me too but with my 18 Sportwagen 1.8T. It is in Canada a "Highland" trim and has most of the safety this Taos has but mine "parks itself too!" No fancy digital though. Ok I like the 6 speed dual clutch I have, the independent suspenscion and the power of the 1.8.

Only thing I miss in my Sportwagen is height. The Taos has a bit more and I am not sure it makes much difference. Now the height in a Tiguan would but that is a whole other ball game.

I still have two yrs of the four on warranty on my Sportwagen and so far it has been "bullet proof!"
So fun to drive, manouverable, functional etc, etc!

That's what subcompact crossovers have been for a while now, lifted hatchbacks. American NEW car shoppers are now on average 59 years old and obese, so having slightly taller vehicles with very large door openings like crossovers have are easier to get in and out of for the mobility impaired due to age and/or obesity.

1) The price is WAY too expensive for a non-German-made vehicle. 2) There's no option for a powered trunk. 3) The driver's side should have a ceiling-mounted hand grip. 4) The engine is too small.

I have one and the engine is fine, actually offers a lot of power and handles EXTREMELY well. Almost feels like a SUV version of a jetta! engine is turbocharged to add a little extra boost. As for hand grip and powered truck, couldnt answer that. Hand grip seems a little bit petty but the trunk i was surprised about. Still a very nice little car, leasing for $230 a month, so price doesnt seem that outlandish

Canadians, test drive the car in winter before buying it. It is because, with a 1.4L engine in the Golf, the engine takes a minimum of 40mins to warm up to send the warm car in the cabin. This is a major problem in the prairies and there are several claims on VW to buy back the car. So with a 1.5L engine for a compact SUV, I believe you will run into similar heating problems in the winter.

I have a 2.0 Tiquan, and it warms up faster than any vehicle that I've owned. Also live on the Prairies of Cda. The NA Golf 2.5 takes a while for sure, but even it isn't 40 minutes. The turbo engine in the 2.0 Tiq' seems to do the trick. Presumed the turbo 1.5 would be similar. Raynor, thanks for the info. I'll look into this.

Sorry, my friend. The marketing folks at VW know quite well what Americans are willing to pay for in a VW. And it's not the MK8 ClubSport. Just as it isn't a European spec Passat or a Touareg. Nor the delightful California camper. We're fortunate that VW has promised Americans a MK8 Golf R and a GTI, neither of which will set any sales records. Your best option is to get a GTI and a Stage I tune with a backup warranty from a tuning vendor like APR for an additional thousand dollars.

@Stephen Hendricks Yes very true I tuned my old MKIV GTI back in the day and it made quite the difference. Its just such a bummer about the Club-Sport because Americans would buy it for sure. According to a review the Club-Sport in Europe costs 2,700 euros over the standard GTI so in the US it would likely have a starting MSRP around $34,000-$35,000 making it a compelling option versus the Honda Civic Type-R and Hyundai Veloster-N. Im sure plenty of people would be interested to get near Golf-R performance for $5000 less.

@WallacEngineering Again, sorry but your arithmetic won't work. The price of a GTI ClubSport in the UK starts at the equivalent of $42,500 without adding the 20% or so for VAT and licensing. And that price doesn't include options including DCC, HUD, sunroof, leather upholstery, and a premium sound system all of which VW has routinely added as standard options to US spec GTIs to meet American consumers' expectations. That puts the hypothetical price of a US ClubSport at the price point of a Golf R which no doubt would have to be increased and run smack dab into the price of an Audi.

VW isn't about to risk cannibalizing Audi sales (and profit) with a GTI that hits $45K. And American consumers aren't going to opt for it either.

@Stephen Hendricks Well thats the thing, it wouldn't be $42,000 over here. You see Europeans pay more for all of their VW models. In exchange they get more premium features and details that we do not get in the USA. In Moto-Man's MK-VIII GTI review, he went over European pricing and as it turned out, the fully loaded GTI he was reviewing costed $59,000 in equivalent USD because it was the German market model. Moto-Man has tons of experience in the industry and he pointed out that this is the way it goes with every VW. To make the cars competitive on price in America, they strip out a bunch of little features and subtle details to make the car cheaper. He said that while his review sample was $59K, he expects US models to start at a base price of $30K-$31K, just a bit more than the current MK-VII GTI, which of course makes sense. So if the Club-Sport was brought over, it would of course receive the same treatment to pull the price down and would indeed start at $35K-$37K.

@WallacEngineering I'm very familiar with the difference between Euro and US spec VWs. But you're missing the point. The USD price equivalent of $42,500 cited by C&D is already stripped of numerous features that are routinely included as standard in US spec VWs. Your estimate based on the simply adding $2700 to Moto-Man's $30K-$32K for a de-contented GTI isn't a car that VW (and its dealers) are willing to offer in the US since its appeal would be limited to the minuscule number of buyers willing to sacrifice amenities, bells, and whistles solely for straight line performance and as a track toy.

Believe me, if VW dealers thought they could sell a stripped GTI ClubSport at $35K-37K, the transaction price of an Autobahn GTI, they'd let out the same howl they put out when VW considered dropping the Golf R in the US in 2018. I'm afraid you're making the common error of many self-defined "enthusiasts" who believe there's a massive potential demand for track toys and stoplight drag racers that simply doesn't exist.

This isn’t what VW is meant to be. I drive an Audi A3. I firmly believe that VW has gotten so cheap in North America, it is even turning me off from Audi. The Jetta was on an amazing trajectory until the last two generations. The Jetta was never meant to be a Corolla, Civic, Elantra competitor. I firmly believe the Audi A3 is what the Jetta is supposed to be, not to the oversized cheap version of today. When VW thought their customers were cross shopping the Japanese brands is when everything went south. VW customers of the 80s, 90s, early 20s wanted a proper German car but did not want to pay for a BMW or Mercedes. VW buyers were willing to pay a premium over the Japanese and American brands. They wanted a simple, powerful, solid German car. The Jetta, Atlas, Tiguan and now this are so so sad.

For $30K you can get a MK8 GTI S which is light years better than this Taos. For $35K you can step up to a loaded GTI SE DSG. Buy the Taos because you like it not because it is the better vehicle. The biggest competitor to the Taos is the GTI sharing the same showroom floor space.

Get rid of the ventilated seats and the interior lighting and regular gauges with 60 more hp and a 0-60 of 6.7 seconds not 9.7
9.7 seconds 0-60 means with a family of 4 your looking at nearly 11 seconds to highways speeds! Looks great im sure it's smooth for the segment. A prius will be passing you with double the MPG!

What nonsense. A 2017 Rav4 had a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds. I don't recall hearing of RAV4s being run over trying to reach highway speeds. Consumers shopping in this segment aren't looking for scalding acceleration and those who regularly seat 4 passengers (plus the ubiquitous canine) are more likely to consider the Tiguan. Furthermore, VW is VERY unlikely to risk cannibalizing sales of their best selling model, the Tiguan, by putting the ubiquitous EA888 engine in the Taos.

@Stephen Hendricks everyone has their own ideal of what "scalding acceleration" is. For some people in some environments it's all you might ever need or hope for. 6.7 seconds is hardly even brisk. Additionally younger more inexperienced drivers typically have less ability to judge speeds of other cars. Providing them a car with fair acceleration is more important than somone like you since I'm sure you have years of experience behind the wheel.

I am a VW Guy. VW needs to GET RID OF the FAKE exhaust cutouts in the bumper. Makes no sense. Either make the bumper smooth or actually exit the exit exhaust through the bumper cutouts. We all know they are fake. Duh! Which brings me to another point. The Taos has the 4Motion which back in my day(I'm 54) was called the Synchro on the Vanagon and Quantum and even on the Golf(in other countries but not the USA(scratching my head). The 4Motion name is boring. The 4Motion(Synchro) Taos has the 7 speed DSG(dual clutch) transmission which means that VW MUST make a Taos R. And I am not just talking about an "R Line" cosmetic R Taos. I am talking about a full fledged Taos R(or GT version) with a 240hp GTI engine. We deserve to have this in the USA. Heck in Europe the VW provides the Tiguan R line with ACTUAL performance goodies. Why not the USA? Okay okay, enough complaining. I agree that there is plenty of competition for the VW Taos and this is why VW needs to make it stand out. Most sales will be those who are VW nuts already. But if VW does make a Taos R(GT) or an "Off Road" version with some flaring and large/wider suspension the Taos will do VERY nicely in the USA. My personal preference as far as that huge panoramic sunroof is that I prefer to not have it at all. From what I understand having a sunroof makes it so there needs to be additional bracing and in the structure and therefore make it heavier. Also, I cannot imagine the repair costs to something that large in the future and for privacy while driving inside the vehicle I do not like all that light coming into the cabin. VW, please provide an upscale VW SUV with the option of NOT having a sunroof. Also, what happened to fog lights??

Everyone hates on Trump, but if we still had him there's a very good chance that all that manufacturing would have moved to the US. German cars made here such as the Mercedes built in Alabama have WAY better quality control than those from Mexican plants, and probably not bad for our economy either.

@Stephen Hendricks Yes, right, he had a huge impact with the stoppage of numerous outsourcing plans due to the inherent risk dropping stock prices for anyone talking about moving, along with new production plans having been moved to the US rather than Mexico, along with a dramatic drop in H1B visa issuance as when not outsourcing jobs employers were falsely claiming that no Americans wanted say chemical engineering jobs when in reality they simply wanted to pay ridiculously low wages to Indians and Chinese and others that would work for pennies in order to get a visa to the US where they could have children that would be automatically naturalized US citizens. Don't let partisan politics blind you when either wing flapping the confused eagle we call the US does something that benefits the American people, such as trade policies that, no matter how successful, at least make a real attempt to stop the bleeding that is the massive trade imbalance. Remember, when a country has such a huge trade deficit, its actually economically advantageous for the country to have no trade at all than all that revenue leaving the country.

"You and I, we're in the minority now-a-days..." You have always been. This is the problem with self-described "car guys" deciding to review actual, high-volume, regular cars. You aren't willing to see/capable of understanding/interested in knowing what the majority of the world wants in a transportation appliance. And yes, to the overwhelming majority of people, that's what these machines are. They are not toy time machines to a graying man's lost youth. Nor are the latest (expensive, unreliable) engineering developments attainable to someone who also wants to house and feed offspring.

But, and hear me out, we know we're in the minority.
The issue isn't that we despise high-volume cars that aren't geared towards enthusiasts. We just hate seeing new crossovers added to a sea of boring crossovers when there could be more high-volume sedans and hatches, the former of which aren't immediately needed when someone has or is about to have their first child.
This particular case just happens to be enthusiasts lamenting the lack of visual variety on the road.

@Link1129 If self-styled "enthusiasts" did more than "lament" and actually purchased vehicles there would be more "variety" on the road. Frankly, I share the preference for sedans and hatches. (I currently own a GTI...my third.) And I'm actively considering an Arteon or a KIA Stinger. But I can hardly blame VW for producing vehicles that actually move off dealer lots.
