@Gage Piel in brawl they were heroes. But for some odd reason in ultimate, king dedede’s character descriptions never mention his heroics and only go on about how he stole dreamland’s food. I understand it was the first Kirby game, but still annoying that they never mention his more compassionate side. This is a problem because with how frequently it’s brought up, “Dedede steals the food in Dreamland” seems like it happens as frequently as Bowser kidnapping Peach to a non Kirby fan. Additionally, despite Palutena’s Guidance bringing up Subspace Emmisary multiple times, King Dedede’s guidance only goes over his Gordo Throw and never mentions how he was basically the biggest Hero of Brawl’s Story
He was also featured in the heroes vs. villains splatfest from Splatoon 2 (Seen here in this image https://splatoonwiki.org/wiki/File:S2_Splatfest_Hero_vs_Villain.png ) he’s on the villains side with the likes of Ganondorf, Ridley, K.Rool, and Bowser. Additionally Pearl and Marina constantly go on about all villains being evil, dastardly characters that basically want to rule the world. although to be fair they also considered Dark Pit a villain when he’s not either. To be even fairer, Splatoon Dialogue is intentionally cheesy and over exaggerated
But, Smash also had a heroes vs villains event. In the promotional image they imply meta knight as a villain, ( shown here in this link https://www.ssbwiki.com/List_of_Event_Tourneys#/media/File%3AHeroes_Vs._Villains.jpg )
and this happens again when they had another tournament event based on characters that have “fallen to darkness” which, again, feels wrong to compare Meta Knight to a character like Sephiroth
Too be clear i don’t hate evil characters. Bowser and Jr. are some of my favorite Mario characters actually. It’s more annoying that it feels like Sakurai is ignoring Dedede’s heroics because he was “Evil” in 3 of the 4 games he likes to represent. Imagine if Donkey Kong was constantly deemed evil because of the Mario Vs. DK series? That’s kinda how Dedede feels

There's a gacha figure of him and kirby that talks about how Dedede is not a villain, he and kirby are the sworn rivals of Dreamland (in Dedede's words), but not enemies, the gacha even says how King Dedede was disappointed when he came into the forgotten land and didn't found Kirby somewhere, so yeah, he is not evil, just competitive and usually possessed.

Little detail, but Dedede's hammer is just as worn out as he is. You can see the cracks and scuffs in the wood as he takes it out. He was entering a fight against an army with a hammer on the verge of breaking, and still held his ground. I'm willing to bet even after the head broke, he used the handle like a club to buy some extra time.

Let me remind you all that Kirby just beat him down TWO health bars, and he was struggling to get up from that a minute ago. But the second his minion is in danger, all traces of exhaustion vanish and he's ready to go down swinging. Compare that to Super Star Ultra where he was basically sacrificing his entire castle's population to Kirby, just to slow him down.
One of the King's most badass moments, for sure, and if we needed proof that Dedede's an outright hero now, this is pretty much it.
...also that leopardskin coat is awesome and I kinda hope he keeps it going forward.

In my opinion, i think the slaughter in ultra was hurting him, breaking his soul from the inside, as when bandana wanted to go, he denied it and lent him a spot in the now empty stands

@flesh dadbot It was definitely starting to weigh on him near the end...but honestly? He didn't even seem to think about it until Bandana Dee pointed out that Kirby was just straight-up way too strong for any mook to beat.
YMMV, but that's when I think it really hit home for him what he was doing, and that's when he started to consciously change.
