i wish to add context to the supreme courts decision. They were specifically striking down Biden Admin using the HEROES Act or some covid related act as the funding mechanism / legal path for student loan forgiveness.

That is all to say, the executive branch does have legal authority to cancel or discharge student loans as approved by Congress in the 1965 education Act.*
There have been Senators who have reminded him of this and activists groups like “the debt collective” who have written up the entire executive order, all that is needed is his signature.

So, it is misleading, John, when you say “Biden is doing all that he can”.

If you have a college degree and got a minimum wage job because of lack of trying to get a better paying job, then ask yourself why you went to college. That foolishness is on you. If you paid a huge tuition for a degree field with lack of high demand, that's on you. If you're not going into a STEM field like engineering or computer science, math or physics, then you shouldn't take out a ridiculous loan. The loan you takeout should be sensible enough that you're going into a field that pays good enough that you won't have to spend the next 40 years paying off the loan. Not everyone is college material...

@@godbyone If it does have a detrimental effect on the economy, specifically causing inflation, it's still better than cancelling corporate debt. If it does cause inflation, it'll be reflective of the amount of debt cancelled, which may be nearly negligible in the big picture. It would make a substantial impact on lives of a segment of the population and have little impact on the rest of the country. It should give the economy a boost though. There is concern that it may cause inflation but I have to refresh my memory from two years ago and read up on it before I comment offhand.

This is money that is helping your fellow Americans. Though in this tranche there are student loan borrowers who don't make the big bucks, many other borrowers with cancelled loans do have high salaried jobs and subsequently do pay a higher percentage in taxes, funding necessary social programs that they don't benefit from.

I am ok with them telling people Biden's administration did it. Democrats don't toot thier own horns enough. I am still paying off my student loan from grad school. I still made some type of payment throughout the pandemic and because it was zero interest I was able to make a big impact. I wish they would just lower the interest rates. I am enrolled in the save program but I will have my loans paid off well before it is canceled. Fine with that too.

I'm certainly concerned about Biden's poling numbers. That said, every time we see actual voting the poling is way off. We've heard that he's hemorrhaging support from black voters just to see him do 13 points BETTER in the South Carolina primary than last time. So, it's getting hard to take poling seriously. I think this is a bit of a misstep. Student loan forgiveness is the strongest motivator to vote democrat for me. This policy specifically excludes young people. By definition 10 years of payments means anyone under 30 will not be impacted by this for years - potentially after Trump or other republicans have had the chance to reverse the policy. I see no reason why twenty something’s should be at all moved by this. I doubt I will ever see this impact me.

I see a lot of people getting angry at either those who have gotten student loans forgiven (disclosure: mine have not been) or those who are advocating for them being forgiven.

I think there is a lot of misplaced anger though. The problem is an institutional one. The cost of going to school even 20 years ago was a fraction of what it is now. Heck, the schools in California were free during the 60s and 70s. My tution when I was an undergrad (disclosure I started in 1993) was $1,100 per term. With three terms a year that's $3,300 (not including other costs). I just took a look at my university's website and found out tuition for a full year is now $11,900. It has gone up almost four times. So the problem starts AT the universities. Now if you want to have a conversation about student loans, do some research and argue your point. But be mad at where the place that the problem starts.

I went from paying $380 a month for my student loans to $107 thanks to Biden's SAVE plan. And after eight years, the balance I'll have left will be forgiven thanks to PSLF. Thank you President Biden for forgiving my student loans last year through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. President Bush and congress put this plan in place in 2007 to encourage people to work within the public sector since there was a shortage due to the pay being lower than many private employers. So if you work within the government like myself, or you are a firefighter, policeman, teaching in low income areas, doctor or nurse within certain areas you qualify. Also working at certain non profits qualify as well. After make 10 years of payments you qualify for the PSLF. And for those you working within those fields thank you for your service.

This loan forgiveness is huge. I know it's controversial. I get it, I guess. My loans have doubled because of interest over the years. I was someone who could never afford to pay them because I had basic expenses that took my entire check and student loan companies just don't work with you. They can lower the payment only so much - but it was always still way too high. So I would have to put it into forbearance again. So loans that started at 60k ended up at over 130k. I never wanted any of that to happen. I'm not a deadbeat or someone who doesn't appreciate their education. I always just made the choice to put a roof over my head and my son's head. If my loans don't get forgiven and my neighbor's do then I will be ecstatic for them because I know I'm not the only one who has gone through this. I can't put anything in my name, it affects relationships, it quite frankly has caused many problems in my life. So if forgiveness can help ANYONE, even if I'm not included, I'm 100% in favor of it.

And yes that affects me. For a long time it hasn't because the US dollar is the worlds reserve currency and also because due to the way the printed money usually funnels into the economy it inflates stock prices (making the elite rich, which is the point) before it hits the real economy. But now it has slowly began to trickle down into the price of real goods. Add on top of that a bunch of invented money being distributed to Biden voters, sorry I meant to say student loan receivers and you will get a ton of inflation.

The issue is the interst rate is that of a mortgage. Forgive the interest rate and more can get paid off quicker. I work in education, and like a lot of parents, we got tricked into the Prent Plus loans, which the SAVE plan does NOT qualify us for. We only get income driven programs, which are a joke. I am a school district eomployee and make less in my position as a public servant than an equivelant private sector job. The PSLF, which is a 10 year payment plan, costs almost DOUBLE each month if I take it vs paying it for 30 years. I would pay off the loan in 10 years plus an additional 28% on top of that, and maybe loose my home plus starving as I do it. The 30 year plan has me paying 140% what was borrowed. so, on $80k, I would pay almost $200k while my son gets to pay under $100/mo while I have an $872/mo payment and he makes the same wage as I do. I should be exempt as being in service, like military service workers do. Just because I did not carry a gun or be in a military capacity does not make my service to my community and country any less.

If the university system is so bad that it needs a student loan bailout, shouldn't it also be reformed? I'd look at which academic programs had students that were least likely to pay back their loans, and cut those. Otherwise we're gonna be spending billions more to bail them out all over again in 5-10 years.
