You've Got A Friend
T. Graham Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running (come running)
To see you again (running to see you again)
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call me
And I'll be there
Yes I will (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Just keep you head together
And call my name, call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at you door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, running baby (come running)
To see you again (running to see you again)
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there (yeah, yeah, yeah)

Now ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
They'll take your soul if you let them
Oh but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running (come running)
Oh to see you again (running to see you again)
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you gotta to do is call
And I'll be there (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yes I will
You've got a friend
You've got a friend

Ain't it good to know
Ain't it good to know

Ain't it good to know you've got a friend, now
I say, you've got a friend

Just dropping this here to vent.

I lost my 2nd dad less than a year ago. My mom remarried after my dad passed away. My stepdad is wonderful and loved my mom so much, treated her like a queen. And then, he passed away too.

It was all of a sudden. He just complained of a tummy ache on Sunday morning. Took him to ER. He was then transferred to ICU on Monday evening. He passed away Wednesday evening. All those time from Sunday morning, we did not see him due to COVID restrictions. At first it was only tummy ache, then complications. It was all of a sudden, losing someone like that and not being able to be there next to them.

Tonight, my friend's dad got rushed to ICU due to pneumonia. He is in the 70s. After losing someone so quick, I'm paranoid when people get rushed to the hospital. You'll never know when it is the last conversation you will have.

Take your time. Cherish each moment. Be there for somebody.

Mom,
You sang this song when you and dad got married in 1976.

You sang this song at dad's funeral in 1982.

You waited 38 years to see him again...

You are with him now.

You came running to see him again.
You've got your friend back.

Go and be with him.

My dad was in the emergency room before he went to the ICU. I played this song on my phone and put one ear bud in his ear and the other in mine. He had a stroke and could no longer communicate and I held his hand and cried while the song played. My dad showed me this song and it will always be our song.

When my daughter turned 16 she was living with her father in another state. I sent this to the radio station in her town with a letter wishing her a happy birthday. My letter and this song won the contest for the day. It has been our song every since. We send it back and forth since that day. I’m 69 and she is 50 this year.
We are best friends and our love can move mountains.
