Baby I wanna walk you home
Em.......................d....
Oh baby I wanna walk you home
C.......................am......
There's a shadow in the basement
....f...g...............d....
And I'm scared to sleep alone

D.........................
Baby doesn't everybody weep
Em.........................d...
Oh baby, doesn't everybody weep
C....................am......
I'd slide up there beside you
.......f.........g........d....
But my nightmares are too steep

D.............................
Baby I wanna buy you a cadilac
Em............................d..
Oh baby I wanna buy you a cadilac
C...................am......
I bought it with my soul but

F.......g.........................d...
You say that you're gonna give it back

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to T. Rex's song "Cadillac" have a romantic and slightly eerie feel to them. The singer expresses his desire to walk his love interest home because of a shadow he sees in his basement, which scares him to sleep alone. He asks her if everyone cries like he does and admits that his nightmares prevent him from sleeping beside her. Despite this, he wants to lavish her with a luxurious gift - a Cadillac, which he bought with his soul, but she tells him, she will return it.

The opening lines of the song set a tone of tenderness and gentleness. The singer wishes to walk his love interest home, which shows he's protective of her. However, the second stanza takes a dark turn, where the singer reveals that he fears sleeping alone because of a mysterious presence in his basement. This turn in the lyrics hints at potential danger and puts some ambiguity in the song. The third stanza sees the singer expressing his deep affection for his love interest by offering to buy her a Cadillac, using the metaphor of spending his soul. However, she declines the gift by saying she will return it, implying a lack of interest in material possessions.

Almost my favourite TRex track....apart from virtually all the others! This was the B-side of Telegram Sam along with Baby Strange. To my ten year-old ears they were incredibly exotic, writhing, and full of something I couldn't explain at the time.....which of course was sexuality.

@vlixesispunk
