Carsmile Smith & The Old Ones
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Carsmile Smith, he's the old one
Don't you know, that he's a good one?
don't cha, don't chat?
(2 X)
Bessie stood by the side of the grave
like a woman of love in her due
she hung her hands into another grief
for a man she never new
Carsmile Smith, he's the old one
Don't you know, that he's the good one?
don't cha, don't chat?
(2 X)
Bessie stood by the side of the grave
like a woman of love in her due
she hung her hands into another grief
for a man she never new
(long horns part and guitar solo)
don't cha, don't cha?
(more guitar soloing)

don't cha, don't cha, don't cha, don't cha?
(more guitar soloing)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to T. Rex's song "Carsmile Smith & The Old Ones" tell a story about a man named Carsmile Smith who is referred to as the "old one." The first part of the song repeats the phrase "Don't you know, that he's a good one?" which seems to suggest that despite Smith's age, he is still respected and admired by those around him. The second half of the song shifts focus to a woman named Bessie who is mourning at the gravesite of a man she never knew. The lyrics describe her as a "woman of love," which could suggest that she is mourning out of empathy for the man, or perhaps she is mourning for someone else that she loved who has also passed away. The song ends with an extended guitar solo and more repetitions of the phrase "Don't cha, don't cha?"

The lyrics to "Carsmile Smith & The Old Ones" are somewhat cryptic, but seem to be exploring themes of respect for one's elders, grief, and the mysteries of love and loss. The use of the phrase "old one" to describe Carsmile Smith could be interpreted as a commentary on ageism, with the song suggesting that even though Smith is older, he still deserves to be respected and appreciated. The inclusion of Bessie's mourning also adds a layer of sadness to the song, suggesting that loss is a universal experience that we all must face at some point in our lives.

I always felt this song was only half done, but I'm no Marc Bolan so what do I know? I still love it.

Bolan was putting himself under so much pressure by the time he made Tanx and Zinc Alloy that he wasn’t working on new songs in the way he used to. Look at You Gotta Jive To Stay Alive and Spanish Midnight. Both could have been developed to full songs instead just stick them together.,

It was the same with Shock Rock on Tanx. Great riff and unique sounding vocals on the chorus (Bolan and Visconti). It could have been a great song heralding the end of glam rock. Instead we learned that Marc’s little baby was his girl. A great missed opportunity.

Ultimate it was Bolan’s success and the pressure it brought which led to his downfall. Still my favourite rock star of all time.
