Dwarfish Trumpet Blues
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw a little man who had a toy trumpet
He sat on a stone with his lips to the mouthpiece
He was deaf dumb and blind so he couldn't quite make it
When out of the horn came a solid silver genie
Who was made just to make the little man happy
As the man made sounds the genie painted fluid,
Mind-blowing visions on the little man's brain-box
Everybody small with no lips to play the trumpet
Everybody living inside a giant deaf aid
Everybody's eyes crucified to the tapestry

Woven by the giant with the solid silver genie
Who plays the trumpet

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to T. Rex's song Dwarfish Trumpet Blues begin by introducing the listener to a little man who has a toy trumpet. The little man is seated on a stone with his lips pressed to the mouthpiece of the toy trumpet. Although the little man is deaf, dumb and blind, he starts making sounds with the toy trumpet. Suddenly, out of the horn comes a solid silver genie who has been created solely to make the little man happy. The little man continues playing his toy trumpet while the genie paints mind-blowing, fluid visions all over the little man's brain-box.

The lyrics then move on to describe everybody as small and without lips to play the trumpet. The people are said to be living inside a giant deaf aid where their eyes are crucified to the tapestry woven by the giant with the solid silver genie who plays the trumpet. The lyrics invite the listener to a surreal journey through the imaginative, fantastical world created by T. Rex's lyrics about a little man with a toy trumpet and the vibrant imagery that his playing generates.
