After their success in the early and mid-1970s, the band broke up after Bolan was killed in a 1977 car accident.

The duo landed a record deal with a subsidiary of EMI in February 1968, recording their debut album with producer Tony Visconti. "Debora," the group's first single, peaked at number 34 in May of that year, and their debut album, "My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair...But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brow", reached number 15 shortly afterward. The duo released their second album, "Prophets, Seers & Sages, the Angels of the Ages", in November of 1968.

The lyrics to T. Rex's song Plateau Skull tell a story of a man who sees his girlfriend with another man while flying over the midnight sky. His initial reaction is one of wild anger, and he bites when he sees the man holding her hand. The emotions are so strong that the "penninsular of night" explodes.
In the next verse, the man unzips the heavens and asks his main man what to do. This "main man" advises him to "breeze and dip like lightening across the meadows of the sea" and to let all of his friends know that he has hung out with this "main man."
The song is full of rich imagery and metaphors. The "penninsular of night" exploding, for example, is a powerful metaphor for the man's intense emotions. The idea of unzipping the heavens and speaking to a "main man" who advises him on what to do is a surreal and fantastical image that fits with the psychedelic style of T. Rex's music.
