Summertime Blues
T. Rex & Marc Bolan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I`m gonna raise a fuss
And I`m gonna raise a holler
About workin` all summer
Just tryin` to earn a dollar
Well, I went to my boss
Who governs me
He said, "No, dice, bud
You gotta work late"

Sometime I wonder
What I`m gonnna do
There ain`t no cure
For the summertime blues

Well, my mom and papa told me
Now you better earn some money
If one of you is gonna go
Ridin` next Sunday
Well, I didn`t go to work
I told my boss I was sick
He said, "You can`t use the car
`Cause you didn`t work a lick"

Sometime I wonder
What I`m gonnna do
There ain`t no cure
For the summertime blues

Gonna save two weeks
Gonna have a fine vacation
Gonna take my problem
To the United Nations
Well, I went to my congressman
He sent me back a note
It said, "I``d like to help you, hon
But you`re too young to vote"

Sometime I wonder
What I`m gonnna do
There ain`t no cure
For the summertime blues

Now there ain`t no cure
For the summertime blues

Now there ain`t no cure
For the summertime blues

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to T. Rex & Marc Bolan's song Summertime Blues describe the frustration and disillusionment of working hard all summer without much reward. The singer is angry and upset about having to work late and missing out on potential fun activities, such as going on a ride next Sunday. The singer's attempts to get out of his obligations are futile, whether it's pretending to be sick to not go to work or seeking help from politicians who are uninterested in helping him. No matter what the singer does, there is no way to cure the "summertime blues" of feeling trapped and unfulfilled during the hottest and most exciting months of the year.

The song is a well-known cover of Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit of the same name, but T. Rex & Marc Bolan's version has its own unique style and sound that deviates from the original. The guitar solos and melodies are signature to T. Rex's glam rock era, which infused rock and pop sounds with theatrics, glitter, and eccentricity. The song's simple yet catchy chorus gave it an iconic status among rock fans, and it has been covered by many other musicians over the years.

Saw them in Wash DC in February 1972; same setlist as this March concert in London. Summertime Blues closed the show. Amazing show!!!

Of course the old geezers among us like myself remember this from the late 1950's with Eddie Cochran.
