Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna - 1967 Tyagaraja Bicentennial Concert, MMA

A concert that stands out for many notable things but the most important among them being the variety of Tyagaraja kritis presented here. Every composition has been rendered so true-to-the-book that the rendition of each composition outshines the other leaving an ardent listener in a dilemma—which is the composition that I enjoyed most ? Essentially, every composition is thoroughly enjoyable.

There is lyrical delight due to the chaste diction in every composition. Then there is the right measure of rAgam delineation, followed by the inimitable and impeccable svara prastArams, the unalloyed bhAvam in each composition brought out distinctly, and not to forget the nice laya vinyAsam.

This is a concert to be cherished for decades like many of his other concerts. It is for reasons both obvious and not so obvious. The obvious reasons are mentioned above. The not so obvious reasons need some elaboration.

The first reason being at no place Balamuralikrishna has flaunted his immense talent; rather it is on a tight leash and the rendition is as it should be—as Tyagaraja intended the compositions to be. Through this, he has paid homage to his role model.

The second reason is the varied selection so that every facet of Tyagaraja’s music is represented in this concert—to highlight the great balance that Tyagaraja struck between his telling lyrics and his soulful music. Through this, Balamuralikrishna has revealed the rigour it takes to let people enjoy Tyagaraja’s great music.

The third reason is the rendition of a verse by Tyagaraja’s own disciple to let people know the greatness of Tyagaraja; and also to let people know the calibre of Tyagaraja’s disciple. Through it, Balamuralikrishna has only showed how much more he adores the Saint.

And the last reason is the thoughtfulness with which the mangaLam in the rAgam mohana is presented. It is the rAgam with which the Saint welcomed his chosen deity Shri Rama. With that same rAgam Balamuralikrishna bids adieu to the Saint.
