THE-O Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I cross the Green Mountain
I sit by the stream
Heaven blazing in my head I
I dreamt a monstrous dream
Something came up
Out of the sea
Swept through the land of
The rich and the free

I look into the eyes
of my merciful friend
And then I ask myself
Is this the end?
Memories linger
Sad yet sweet
And I think of the souls in heaven who will meet

Altars are burning
With flames far and wide
the foe has crossed over
from the other side
They tip their caps
from the top of the hill
You can feel them come
More brave blood to spill

Along the dim
Atlantic line
The ravaged land
lies for miles behind
the light's coming forward
and the streets are broad
all must yield
To the avenging God

The world is old
The world is grey
Lessons of life
Can't be learned in a day
I watch and I wait
And I listen while I stand
To the music that comes
from a far better land

Close the eyes
of our Captain
Peace may he know
His long night is done
The great leader is laid low
He was ready to fall
He was quick to defend
Killed outright he was
by his own men

It's the last day's last hour
of the last happy year
I feel that the unknown
The world is so near
Pride will vanish
And glory will rot
But virtue lives
and cannot be forgot

The bells
of evening have rung
there's blasphemy
on the end of the tongue
Let them say that I walked
in fair nature's light
And that I was loyal
to truth and to right

Serve God and be truthful
Look upward beyond
Beyond the darkness that masks
the surprises of dawn
In the deep green grasses
of the blood stained woods
They never dreamed of surrendering
They fell where they stood

Stars fell over Alabama
And I saw each star
You're walking in dreams
Whoever you are
Chilled as the skies
Keen as the frost
The ground's froze hard
And the morning is lost

A letter to mother
came today
Gunshot wound to the breast
is what it did say
But he'll be better soon
He's in a hospital bed
But he'll never be better
He's already dead

I'm ten miles outside the city
And I'm lifted away
In an ancient light
That is not of day
They were calm they were blunt
We knew them all too well

We loved each other more than
we ever dared to tell

Overall Meaning

The song "2010" by THE-O is a reflective and melancholic piece that touches on various themes and experiences, including war, death, and righteousness. The opening lyrics describe a dream of some kind of catastrophic event that comes from the sea and sweeps through the land, affecting both the rich and the free. The subsequent lines talk about the singer's merciful friend and ask whether this is the end, hinting at a sense of despondency and worry. Later in the song, the singer pays tribute to fallen soldiers, hoping that they were loyal to truth and right, and urges listeners to serve God and be truthful.

One striking aspect of the song is the way the singer employs vivid imagery to evoke emotion and set the scene. The opening line includes crosses and streams, and the idea of heaven blazing in the singer's head provides a sense of otherworldliness. Other lines, such as those describing blood-stained woods and stars falling over Alabama, conjure up powerful and unexpected mental pictures. The dissonance between some of these images, such as the tranquil green grasses and the violent war, highlights the complexity of the themes being explored in the song.

Another interesting feature of "2010" is the way it incorporates historical allusions and draws on a range of cultural and political ideas. For instance, the line "the foe has crossed over from the other side" hints at a possible reference to Cold War tensions. Similarly, references to the ravaged land and the avenging God could be seen as allusions to biblical stories, while talk of a great leader being laid low and killed by his own men brings to mind historical examples of political assassinations. These allusions and references help to add depth and nuance to the song, encouraging listeners to engage with the ideas being presented.

Overall, "2010" is a thought-provoking and evocative song that touches on a wide range of themes and ideas. Through its use of vivid imagery, historical allusions, and poetic language, the song invites us to reflect on our place in the world and the values that we hold dear.

Am 73. 1st time seeing this movie. Excellent!

@leeinwis

Did you think you'ld live long enough to see the fall of the USA ?

@Khorzho

My 2nd viewing - the first was when I was a small child shortly after it was out on VHS. Sadly the hopes of this movie seem further afield now more than then.

@onepuffman

Do you? So far it's still on top. @@leeinwis

@@KhorzhoI think many years from now our passion for space will be re ignited. We just need to develop and perfect a few technologies first such as cryosleep, allowing long duration travel. Everything is just so far apart. The farthest we could ever hope to travel would be to the Andromeda galaxy but if we wait long enough eventually that will collide with our own Milky way galaxy. Also we can easily send probes to places like Europa, instead of a manned craft. Theres very little incentive to get boots on the ground in those remote desolate places. In my opinion we should explore it for the same reason that we didn’t just send a drone to the north pole or to some undiscovered Land we went there and saw it with our own eyes

75 and my first time seeing it. Wow, what a ride!😍🥰

My dad rented this movie for us when I was about 9 years old, sometime in 1990. This took place then-20 years in the future, 2010 seemed so far away. Watching this now (2023) , a movie set in the future, which takes place 13 years ago. Man time flies, funny how that works. 😆

@davidflitcroft7101

The time thing does bother me. I think they need to retitle the Movie "2101: A Space Odessey". Now i can believe THAT!

@ryanhanks4852

We had basically the same experience. I watched it around the same time and my dad rented it.

This movie takes place 2010 years after Jesus Christ founded the Christian Church.
