Avenir
TR/ST Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Car tu combattras tu vivras ici-bas

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of TR/ST's song "Avenir" deal with the themes of fear, survival, and desperation in the face of living in an impoverished, urban environment. The singer describes the people and surroundings around him, where homes are "open to the emptiness of consciousness" and where the only chance of survival is to succumb to fear in order to earn even the smallest amount of money through prostitution ("survival in fear for the price of a trick"). The song's title, "Avenir," which means "future" in French, is ironic given the hopelessness of the situation.

The second verse highlights the singer's observation of those who he sees as having a "precious gift" of hatred without understanding why, and he palpably describes the fear of "the machete that cuts the breath from your future." The bleakness of the situation is further emphasized in the final verse, where the singer laments that existence has become a pattern, and the hope in desperation seems to be the only form of currency for these people ("you must pay, pay this price if you want to exist").
