Birds Dont Sing
TV Girl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She said how could you joke at a time
Like this
I know why, cause this is what you wanted all along
Now Isn't it?

I think that all you ever really ever wanted
Was the reason to complain
That never stopped you before, don't let it get in your way

Those are her words, not mine
As far as I'm concerned, we could have had a good time, so
If you walk out that door, you disgust me
I can't say nothing no more to discuss

()
Birds don't sing, they just fall from of the sky
Girls don't call, and they never tell you why
That's just how they say goodbye
Goodbye ()
Don't listen to my music, don't lie in my bed
Don't listen to the references
The things that you might have actually said

Cause those were my words, not yours
As far as I'm concerned, it could have been a lot worse
I wasn't trying to avoid the confrontation
She isn't cryin', she was just makin' conversation

()
Birds don't sing, they just fall from of the sky
Girls don't call, and they never tell you why

That's just how it all goes down
Go down

Overall Meaning

The song "Birds Don't Sing" by TV Girl is a reflection on the dissolution of a relationship. The lyrics are directed towards a former partner and the singer is confronting them about their behavior in the relationship, as well as their reaction to its end. The first verse starts with the female partner of the singer saying, "How could you joke at a time like this?" referring to the end of their relationship. The singer believes that the female partner wanted the breakup all along and that they were just looking for the right excuse. The tone of the song is one of condemnation and disappointment.

In the second verse, the singer says that all their partner wanted was a reason to complain, and that they always found something to complain about. The partner is depicted as someone who is always looking for flaws and unable to appreciate the good things in life. The singer then turns to the breakup itself, stating that if the partner walks out, they will disgust him and that there will be nothing left to discuss. The chorus line, "Birds don't sing, they just fall from the sky, Girls don't call, and they never tell you why," is repeated several times, underscoring the sense of disappointment and loss.

The final verse is a meditation on the aftermath of the relationship. The singer tells the partner not to listen to their music or lie in their bed anymore, as those were just his words, not the partner's. He acknowledges that it could have been worse in some ways and that he wasn't trying to avoid confrontation, but that the partner was just making conversation and not crying about it. The song ends with a final repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the sadness and bitterness of the end of the relationship.

Birds don't sing, they just fall from of the sky Girls don't call, and they never tell you why That's just how they say goodbye Goodbye ()
Birds don't sing when they die, they simply fall. Girls won't call you to say goodbye and explain why they're leaving, that's just how they say it. Goodbye.

Don't listen to my music, don't lie in my bed Don't listen to the references The things that you might have actually said Cause those were my words, not yours As far as I'm concerned, it could have been a lot worse I wasn't trying to avoid the confrontation She isn't cryin', she was just makin' conversation
Please don't listen to my music or sleep in my bed anymore, it's over. Don't try to replicate the things we said to each other because they were my words, not yours. Honestly, things could have gone much worse. I wasn't trying to avoid the confrontation, and she wasn't really crying, she was just talking.

Just like how birds die silently, girls leave without a proper goodbye or explanation. That's how it happens, it's life.

After 9 years, I've decided my interpretation of this video.
The birds are a symbol of our own agency in love/expression and how we choose to use it.
Kris uses his to manipulate Maddie's agency into his desired result, without regard for her own desires.
The magic works, but the version of her that he gets is not her, because he has manipulated her free will to gain her affection - it's not the authentic Maddie. That's why her bird is dead and she is behaving like a zombie.
One day, she wakes up in a moment of clarity and realizes that "herself" is gone, as she is in the grips of this "love spell" (aka he manipulated her into giving up pieces of herself & her authentic spark, in order to forge their relationship). So the predatory bird (him) is holding the dead canary (her). It's not a coincidence the moment of clarity comes when he wraps his arms around her.
And in this moment, when reality comes rushing back, she retaliates, throwing all of "what she lost" back in his face, showing him how he hurt her.
Now she's deranged again, because she's so far from herself, proud that she struck back. But it's short lived because the consequences still follow her, his impact still follows her.

Thus, the relationship comes unravelled. It doesn't end well for either of them, because...... love spells are destructive. manipulating others' free will is not going to lead to a symbiotic relationship. it leads to bitterness, regret, and resentment. Which is the arc I believe we see here.

Takes one to know one. Or im projecting. Have a good day!

I think that the birds represent love, and that they're fake because it's fake love. And usually love makes your heart sing, but these birds don't, they just fell from the sky... And in the end, they are hurt from the fake love between them

@tonberryking7836

totally. the small bird she stopped caring about was her love for herself, or the idea of a relationship that she actually wants

@muffinlamp

@@tonberryking7836 Oh! that kinda makes sense when she stuffs the small bird in the guy’s mouth. she’s placing her sense of self worth on him rather than herself, literally suffocating him.

@babytuckoo

I think that the bird represents the 2008 financial crisis, and in the end they are hurt from the crisis and its reverberating effects on the global economy
