Blue Hair
TV Girl Lyrics

But that's not something you can teach
What seemed so blue in the sunlight
By the night was a pale green
And I tried to hold her
But it didn't really last long
And she's getting olderI guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off
She asked me if she was pretty
Well it's clear that the girl's a fraud
There's really no way of winning
If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde
And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop
Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off
It looked like cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away
Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age
And I guess I'll just miss her
Even though she isn't even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off
The song "Blue Hair" by TV Girl is a bittersweet tune that reflects the mixed emotions and memories of a past relationship. The song is about a girl who asks the singer how to be funny and whether she is pretty. The girl is struggling with her own self-image and the perception of others, and her blue hair is a symbol of her individuality and uniqueness. However, as the song progresses, it is apparent that the girl is facing a crisis and is losing her identity as she compromises herself to fit into the societal beauty standards. In the end, she cuts off her blue hair, and with that, she loses a part of herself that made her stand out.
The lyrics "What seemed so blue in the sunlight, by the night was a pale green" is a poetic metaphor for the fleeting nature of identity and self-expression. The color blue is usually associated with sadness, and the girl's hair had a bluish hue that made her unique. However, over time, her blue hair faded to green, indicating that what was once a unique aspect of her personality became more subdued and ordinary. The lyrics "I tried to hold her, but it didn't really last long, and she's getting older, I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off" reveal a sense of helplessness on the singer's part. He recognizes that the girl is growing up and going through changes that he cannot control, and she needs to make peace with herself.
To conclude, "Blue Hair" is about the struggle to conform versus the urge to stay true to oneself. The girl chooses to conform, and the song laments the loss of her unique identity. The music video for the song features a montage of footage from various US beauty pageants, which reinforces the idea of societal beauty standards and conformity. The song is a poignant reminder that society often values conformity over individuality, and it is up to us to stay true to ourselves.

She asked me how to be funny
She sought advice on how to be humorous
But that's not something you can teach
Being funny isn't a skill that can be taught
What seemed so blue in the sunlight
Her hair appeared blue in bright light
By the night was a pale green
Her hair color shifted and appeared light green at night
And I tried to hold her
I attempted to comfort her
But it didn't really last long
My efforts to comfort her were temporary
And she's getting older
She's becoming more mature as time passes
I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off
She thinks she needs to change her appearance as she grows older
She asked me if she was pretty
She sought validation on her physical appearance
Well, it's clear that the girl's a fraud
It's obvious that she's not being genuine
There's really no way of winning
There's no way to please everyone and gain their approval
If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde
If people see her as a stereotypical, unintelligent blonde, she can't change that perception
And she cried over nothing
She became emotional for no apparent reason
So there was nothing I could do to stop
I couldn't prevent her from feeling upset
Her from cutting
She decided to change her appearance by cutting her hair
Her beautiful blue hair off
Her hair, which was once considered aesthetically pleasing, was cut off
It looked like cotton candy
Her hair had a texture and appearance similar to cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away
Her hair was as fleeting and temporary as the act of eating cotton candy
Last I heard she was living
The most recent information I have is that she's residing somewhere
With a boy who acts his age
She's currently in a relationship with someone who behaves maturely
And I guess I'll just miss her
I know I'll feel nostalgia because of her absence
Even though she isn't even really gone
Despite the fact that she's still alive and potentially nearby
But things are just different
Our dynamic has changed in some way
Ever since she cut her blue hair off
Our relationship has changed since she altered her appearance

There are several interpretations to this song. Let me explain it all for you.
1- As you can know, most people with daddy issues or people with mental illnesses in general dye their hair blue just like sa victims get a medusa tattoo and suicidal people get a semi colon tattoo. What I think is like, the guy who's singing and the girl he's mentioning fell in love while her hair was still in blue. While she was still suffering and mentally ill and going through some stuff. They went through hard times together, while her hair was blue. She was a mentally ill blue haired girl in his heart. But then, she cuts it off, she gets rid of it, her hair. She wants to heal, she wants to move on from all those trauma. But, for him, it feels weird because he has always known her as the mentally ill girl. All those stuff they went through. She became a whole new happy person instead of the depressive person he loved and used to know. He was now the only depressive one in the relationship.
2- It could be showing that she's growing up. The lyrics "And she’s getting older" and "It looked like cotton candy" proves this. Like children, love glitters and unicorns. C'mon admit it we all dreamt of dying our hair bright pink or blue. She dyed her hair when she was still a child. and the guy singing it has known her since then. He has known her all his life as the childish girl with blue hair. and now, she matured and changed. So he's y'know. His childhood crush or friend or his kindergarden girlfriend changed so yeah. or it could mean that the girl was still childish up to her adulthood because of she didn't have a proper childhood. Now, she's finally starting to act her age. The lyrics "Last I heard she was living, With a boy who acts his age" proves this.
3- I'm not very sure about this but I think the blue hair could mean her neck and her life. The line "And I tried to hold her, But it didn’t really last long" proves this. And also the line "And she cried over nothing, So there was nothing I could do to stop, Her from cutting, Her beautiful blue hair off" I feel like some of y'all can understand it if you have ever had a suicidal friend or somebody dear to you that committed suicide. I think her hair was actually blonde? Since the song mentioned "you'll always be a dumb blonde" which means her hair wasn't actually blue. Blue hair must've represented something else. And I think her neck or her life was the perfect interpretation. But you might be confused because the lyrics mentioned "And I guess I’ll just miss her, Even though she isn’t even really gone, But things are just different. Ever since she cut her blue hair off" The lyrics mean that he'll miss her, even though she is still forever in his memories and his heart. Things are different ever since she cut her neck/life off because she's not really in front of him and he cannot hold her anymore.
4-This interpretation is the same as the 3rd interpretation that I mentioned but instead of her neck, I think blue hair could mean her veins. Suicide by slitting your wrists. That makes much more sense because hair is quite similar to veins more than a neck. I'm not really a doctor, a surgeon or biology expert so I don't really know about the science of the color of veins. It might be blue after u die idk.

this song came to me when i needed it more..
i'm leaving my hometown in less than a week, getting in a new school, living with my mom, away from all my friends, but also from my neglective father.
it's a step i didn't want to take, but i've been suffering alone for too long, and.. i'm not myself anymore.
i'm so excited for what this "new life" has to offer me, but i also feel so sad about leaving, knowing i won't get to graduate with my friends, knowing i will be there but only from the sidelines.
i got my hair cut for a change at the end of february, but the person who did it fucked it up so much they had to shorten it significantly, and ever since, i changed for the better.
so this song holds a great significance to me now...
i want to learn how to play it when i have a guitar
i'm the girl who decided to cut her blue hair and move on, literally and figuratively.
@DraxHauntsly_666
I did have blue hair not to long ago.
And I was in a depressive state of mind at the time.
I’m not gonna go into detail.
.
but I did get better slowly.
So I decided to cut / dyed my hair.
.
I still have my own struggles and issues, as we all do.
But I’ve learned to at least try to get better
Cope with it differently.
.
I swear I’m not as dramatic as I explain it to be.

This song reminds me of having to say goodbye to your childhood self too early, being forced to play the "mature" one, being denied to that anything bad ever happened to you in life. I'm not one for supporting the victim mindset but I don't think severe childhood trauma should be ignored because that only worsens the way a person copes with it. Instead, it should be recognized and worked on in a healthy way. But alas, I don't think all of us were blessed with that early on. I pray that you all heal from whatever pain from your past brings you back to this miserably beautiful song.
