Nineteen
T & S Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Not long ago, there was a time
When everything would blow my mind
Then I'd learn a bit more, learn a bit more
It canceled everything I learned before

Said, ?Hey, I don't know what I'm doing?
Should I plan on my class reunion?
I've been working on the vision of clarity
This is how it boils down to me

Well, anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything

Said, anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything
Is possible, is possible to me

Well, was nineteen, I thought I'd seen
Everything I was gonna see
Then I'd see a bit more, see a bit more
Canceled everything I'd seen before

Said, ?Hey, I thought I knew it all?
I was setting up for a hell of a fall
Writing down my philosophy songs
There's one that still holds strong

Said, anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything

Said, anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything
Is possible, yeah, is possible to me

With everyday that goes by
The less and less, I wonder why
'Cause I've seen 'em rise and I've seen 'em fall
But I'll never claim to have seen it all

I said, ?Hey, I ain't seen a thing?
You never know what tomorrow will bring
Been working on a state of mind
Brace yourself for the ride

'Cause anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything

Said, anything is possible
Yeah, anything and everything
Anything and everything

Is possible, is possible, is possible
Is possible to me, to me, to me, to me

Overall Meaning

In Tegan and Sara's song "Nineteen," the lyrics explore the idea of growth and learning as one navigates through life. The singer reflects on their time at the age of nineteen, when they thought they had already experienced everything that life had to offer, only to soon realize that there was still so much more to learn and see. The lyrics suggest that with each new experience or lesson learned, it cancels out everything that was previously understood or believed. The singer questions their own abilities and knowledge, admitting that they don't know what they're doing and wondering if they should plan for their class reunion. However, they also acknowledge that anything is possible and that there is so much to discover and explore in life.

Throughout the song, Tegan and Sara use repetition to emphasize the idea that anything and everything is possible. This repetition serves to drive home the message of the song - that there is always more to learn, more to experience, more to achieve. The chorus, in particular, is impactful in its simplicity, with the repeated statement "anything is possible" serving as a mantra of sorts for the singer.

The song's lyrics also touch on the idea of humility in the face of uncertainty. The singer admits that they don't know everything and that they have much to learn, a sentiment echoed by the line "I'll never claim to have seen it all." The idea that one should remain open to new experiences and perspectives is a recurring theme in Tegan and Sara's music, and "Nineteen" is no exception.

If you watch the banter before this song, you can see tegan very clearly closing her eyes and taking a few moments to get really into the song. Such a great idea. I watched her and was like, damn, I gotta see this live version because it will be amazing!
