Oblivion
T Grimes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another walk about after dark
It's my point of view
'Cause someone could break your neck
Coming up behind you, always coming and you'd never have a clue

I never look behind, all the time
I will wait forever, always looking straight
Thinking, counting, all the hours you wait

(Ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night
See you on a dark night

And no, I'm not a jerk, I would ask
If you could help me out
It's hard to understand
'Cause when you're really by yourself
It's hard to find someone to hold your hand

And now it's good to be tough with me
But I will wait forever
I need someone now to look into my eyes and tell me
"Girl, you know you gotta watch your health"

To look into my eyes and tell me
La, la, la, la, la
To look into my eyes and tell me
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la

Oh, oh
Oh, oh

See you on a dark night
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)

See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (oh, oh)

Overall Meaning

In T Grimes's song Oblivion, the lyrics speak of the fear of being alone in the dark and the vulnerability one can feel. The singer speaks of their POV and how they never look behind, always looking straight ahead, and counting the hours they wait. They also mention how hard it is to find someone to hold their hand when they are alone. The repetition of "see you on a dark night" signifies the fear of being alone and the hope of running into someone who can comfort them.

The chorus of the song repeats "see you on a dark night" multiple times, which highlights the theme of paranoia and loneliness. The lyrics also mention how the singer needs someone to look into their eyes and tell them to watch their health, which could signify the importance of self-care and prioritizing one's well-being. The repetition of "la, la, la, la, la" also emphasizes the vulnerability and anxiety one feels when alone and how we yearn for someone to comfort and protect us.

Overall, Oblivion explores the themes of vulnerability, loneliness, and the fear of being defenseless at night. The lyrics capture the essence of how we all feel when we are alone and how we sometimes long for someone to comfort us.

@Jonnycollie

I’m 17
And I’ve started working
Honestly Now that I make my own money.
I see how much to appreciate the money I was given for my hard work

I’ve worked for these cooking courses looking after kids
At one point me and this other 40 year old women had to take care of 16 kids by ourselves!
For a full week!
I did it and I’m fucking proud with the money I’ve earned.

My point is growing up and earning your own money.
It just shows how much responsibility you need as you grow.

I've only now realized how interesting this music video is with the songs context. Knowing she was assaulted and that this song is about feeling unsafe at night, afraid of being attacked (presumably by a man) this music video feel like confronting masculinity (as almost all of the strangers shown are men of different ages and all the shows/activities are generally considered masculine). It feels like a video of trying to almost shock therapy yourself by surrounding yourself with what scares you (like men in general after one attacks you) and learning to be comfortable in that space, both interacting with them and just as someone who happens to be existing in that same space.

Edit:
I have been receiving comments on this regularly for the last 3 years. They entertain me to no end. And they also make me sad.

To fellow victims: you are not alone. I hope you find peace from what has happened.

To the trollz: keep trolling. They make me laugh.

To the hurt men defending themselves or calling me a feminist (like that's a bad thing?) or that I'm saying all men bad or whatever:
1. I never said masculinity is a bad thing. I dont believe that. It is just as important as femininity.

2. I hope that someday you realize that you truly have no idea what it's like to be a woman. That you never will. That you see women being stay at home moms (which isnt easy but youll probably never be a sahd so how would you ever know) or famous streamers or only fans girls raking in money and you think we are privileged. That feminism has given us more power than men and that our lives are easier now than yours.

There is nothing further from the truth. And as long as we suffer, we will speak on it. If you don't like it, close the page or help us.

Art can be interpreted in any which way you like. It can mean multiple things at once. This is a fun song to dance to so i don't blame people for not wanting to assign a dark meaning. Don't! For many this is just a dance song. But don't hate on those of us that identify with a darker meaning :). Neither of us are wrong
