Not me as grew up in the 50’s, my the time Crossroads arrived on the scene, the only other soap was Coronation Street, my late mother Crossroads, the two soaps were in competition with each other in the 1960’s.

As a boy I was fascinated by the end credits which would fly in and out from different directions, accompanied by this music.

The 'Crossroads' end credits went horizontal then the next cast names went vertical, and then horizontal and so on, did you know this was achieved by two prop guys and two ATV camera's, (one props guy taking the cards of horizontal, the other props guy taking them off vertically, one camera filming the horizontal, the other camera the vertical. 9 times out of 10 this went like clockwork, but episode 1674 is a fine example of the credits colliding, the very first credit 'Crossroads created by....' and the next one 'Script by.....' collide. The timing is out.

Yes! Anyone around 50 remembers coming home after Form 1 in school and watching those credits. My 15 year old couldn't believe it was literally just bits of cardboard with letraset (probably) being pulled along.

@@SimonandJojo My recollection is that the credits took a 90 degree turn in direction once they had showcased in the middle of the screen. Ie , Odd credits in on the left and out at the bottom whereas even credits came in from the top and out at the right.

the credits were alternate up into frame up out of frame, then left into frame left out of frame, (a crossroads of credits) however for the B/W episodes made at Alpha TeleVision studios in Aston, there was often a twist as they were moved out of frame, the Colour episodes made at ATV centre, credits were aligned throughout

I’ve just worked out the chords to this. It’s pretty clever stuff.
A maj B maj D maj E7 A maj C# min F# min B maj G maj E 7 A maj Link A7 over A and D second inv then repeat with countermelodies! Last time finish with A maj then D6 over A pedal then A maj! It took me 2 HOURS to work this out and I have a music degree. Tony you’re a genius!

This is genius. The tune reflects the program: First you hear the Guitar's journey, then you hear the Oboe. Both headed in the same direction but on slightly different routes. Then, on the third verse they meet (at the Crossroads, where else?)

Love it. Like lots of other commenters, I had older relatives who loved Crossroads, and I like to hear the theme tune. The only character I remember was Benny! I suspect the recording was much shorter but looped a couple of times to fill up one side of the single, but none the worse for that!

Blur are using it as the walk-on music on their current tour and hearing it through a big sound system you realise what a great, top-quality recording it is, it's production and musicianship is state of the art early 60s. That didn't come across piddling out of a 70s telly.

A great show and a great theme! This show had the same mistakes as any other shows from the 70’s, yet critics pulled it apart, seen same mistakes on ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Crown Court’ etc. always loved the lower part of the theme (the bit that starts here at 1:13/ 2:57). Lovely you shared this, a great reminder of true tv shows, not the rubbish now. Who can forget this great theme and the ‘Crossroads’ vertical/horizontal end credits. They were pure genius too.

The closing credits went vertical, then horizontal, achieved by using 2 ATV camera's, (one camera filming the vertical, then over to the second camera filming the horizontal, then back to the first camera to film the vertical and so on....) Two prop boys were there to remove the cards vertically and the second props boy took them out horizontally, they replied on vision mixing and timing also, the well remembered end credits were as you mentioned black background with yellow letters, I preferred the horizontal and vertical end credits that were introduced in the early 80's, an orange background with white lettering, as you say a little taster (cliff hanger to keep you hooked till the next episode). A lovely true family show, with Noele Gordon (always the first name on the credits!) Noele Gordon not only a soap star but also on the board of ATV, as well as helping in a big way to launch ATV and get it off the ground, and the only 'Crossroads' cast member be on a permanent contract (known as an ATV staff contract).

I used to watch the very end of the programme in the 70s just to record this theme - sometimes it was longer. For this single they simple stitched it together to make it longer for the single.
Can you believe they also issued it on a 12" record - I have it!
The legendary Vic Flick on guitar!
One of the best TV themes of its time - along with quite a few others.
There used to be some 'alternate takes' on you tube - not sure if they are still there.

If you listen closely enough, you can hear that the harp accompanies the guitar while the piano accompanies the oboe. When guitar and oboe combine, so do their accompanying instruments. This is smart on too many levels.

Tony hatch has done lots of great tunes this was no1 for 7 weeks in early 2021 then there was sons and daughters and now home and away too going in the gold top 40 a genius for someone over 80 to do British TV themes at their best even new faces has charted too much better TV then than today as sadly no more crossroads but what a great tune I still watch it as I have the DVD collection so still hear venus and mars theme by wings too even that was added to this to make it top the chart

The original concept of crossroads was the story based around Meg at the motel and her sister Kitty running her newsagent shop ... the two parts of the song represent Meg's theme and Kitty's theme

Tony Hatch made two recordings of this theme, the first on the Pye label, and the second on his Pye-Astor LP 'Hit The Road To Themeland'. Unfortunately, these were different arrangements, and, dare I say, the musicianship on the LP recording is not great. What I missed about the original theme, was the stridency of the oboe, and the harp arpeggio at the end. These were never replicated. Likewise, Hatch's themes from 'Emmerdale Farm' and 'Hadleigh' were not optimal in their commercial release form. He also made two recordings of 'Man Alive', the first of which (a Pye single) was excellent, but the melody on the television series was played on harmonica; his subsequent recordings transferred it to flute, which works well, but is not the same. Better, if he couldn't find a harmonica player, would have been flute + muted trumpet in unison. A recording of 'Emmerdale Farm' by the Woodland Orchestra (?) exists, which the poster on YouTube claims to be the original. It certainly is very authentic-sounding, until it reaches the end of each section, where the ending of the last phrase is altered. It could have been an original attempt to record it for the series, but eventually altered for the programme. Who knows? His theme from 'Doctors' is one of my favourites. His theme from 'Whodunnit' appears to be a reincarnation of a track on one of his Latin albums - or maybe it's the other way round - I can't remember the dates for these two, but the melody is identical on both.

I never really appreciated this tune when I was younger because it was always the beginning of half an hour of utter bilge. On its own, it's a great piece!
